Bookmarked : Fix Facebook by Making It More Like Google+ - The Atlantic
My colleague Adrienne LaFrance has named the fundamental assumption, and danger, of social media megascale: “not just a very large user base, but a tremendous one, unprecedented in size.” Technology platforms such as Facebook assume that they deserve a user base measured in the billions of people—and then excuse their misdeeds by noting that effectively controlling such an unthinkably la … ⌘ Read more

An estimated 6.8 million fewer female births will be recorded across India by 2030 because of the persistent use of selective abortions, researchers estimate. — The Guardian

And from the same article:

India’s skewed ratio of men to women – currently between 900-930 females per 1,000 males – reflects India’s ingrained attitude towards girls. Boys are seen as breadwinners while girls are seen as a burden across every social class. Boys are more likely to receive more nutritious food and better medical care than girls.

That is just beyond sad.

The Problems with Utilitarianism
I originally wrote this essay in 2014 or 2015 in a Chinese buffet in Athens, Georgia. I’ve changed some of it and am re-adding it here. I talk about the issues with Utilitarianism and a bad book by Sam Harris.

Utilitarianism

At a dumb intuitive level, the “ethical” idea of Utilitarianism in principle gets pretty close to what most people reflexively want from social-political affairs: the greatest good for the greatest number of people—who … ⌘ Read more

Western culture has a very unhealthy attitude towards sleep in general. There is only one socially accepted sleep pattern: Eight hours a night, in one block, starting at between 10pm and 11pm and ending between 6am and 7am. This “early-bird” rhythm is celebrated in to the point of fetishisation and held up as the goal to which all productive adults must aspire. School harem-comedy anime is TV’s last bastion of psychological realism: it portrays a world where teenagers are dumb and socially awkward, and emotions come through on their faces but nobody notices.

Almost all the content I post to social media is posted by a small shell script that simultaneously posts to several services or through IFTTT duplicating those posts to services for which I lack an API key. When facebook broke automated posting, it meant my account went dark. I didn’t notice.

We all know about social constructs vs reality, but there are levels of spookiness (and no upper bound). We can define them as how far a lie can go before the truth gets its boots on. Spookiness level one – money – already goes basically perpetually.

Hot take: social constructs are notoriously difficult to build universal theories about, because belief is fickle and eldrich. Talking or thinking about social constructs is liable to make them change

Bunny-Girl Senpai is an interesting show. It seems to be going for a theme with the various arcs: each one seems to be about how communications media change our behavior & self-image by exerting social pressure with expectations.

In one sense, ‘the computer revolution is over’ because the period of exponential growth behind the tech ended 10 years ago. In another sense, it hasn’t begun: we have sheltered ourselves from the social and intellectual ramifications of computing. Documents are still simulations of paper, & capitalism still exists. So it’s like that period where printing presses existed but everybody used a faux-calligraphic font.
