@jlj@twt.nfld.uk @xuu@txt.sour.is hello! @prologic@twtxt.net and I were chatting about the question of globally deleting twts from the yarn.social network. @prologic@twtxt.net noted that he could build the tools and endpoints to delete twts, but some amount of cooperation from pod operators would be necessary to make it all work together. He asked me to spawn a discussion of the subject here, so here we are!
I don’t have enough technical knowledge of yarn.social to say with any credibility how it all should work, but I can say that I think it ought to be possible and it’d be good to do for those rare times when it’s needed.
maybe social constructivism is just descriptive in how most social scientists create their theories?

@akoizumi@social.kyoko-project.wer.ee What I don’t like is that openbsd is secure and then that means some things are different from like debian. Sometimes the security maens some change or whatever has to be done when on debian nothing additional has to be done.
@akoizumi@social.kyoko-project.wer.ee I don’t really like the way openbsd does things and use Debian on all my servers. But on the desktop side I like it but don’t use it
@akoizumi@social.kyoko-project.wer.ee We were talking about having links on the yarn.social page for some guide on how to setup jenny + mutt
@prologic@twtxt.net There is also a link to the blog post on the yarn.social site about how to setup jenny with mutt.
@movq@uninformativ.de There might not even be any benefit to moving that to yarn.social. Besides the yarn site should promote using yarn not twtxt even though there is a little bit of information on the site.
@akoizumi@social.kyoko-project.wer.ee cool to see that you fixed the css

@prologic@twtxt.net on yarn.social I cannot see the link for the list of pods
We’ve barreled past the microblog line and flew straight over the e-mail chain line. This is just social blogging.
solution to the fermi paradox: ~all species don’t have nerds bc nerds are locally maladaptive, get stuck at the social reality bullshit level, humans are a fluke in the regard (kindness to kin, but for…, uhh, nerds?)
maybe for most people social media isn’t an epistemic hazard, but “just” an attention hazard?
@chronolink@chrono.tilde.cafe Replies are not part of the original twtxt format. They were added later as an extension by Yarn.social: https://dev.twtxt.net/doc/twtsubjectextension.html (only the section “Machine-Parsable Conversation Grouping” is used these days)
It’ll track a bunch of finger(1) endpoints and let you see what’s new. Very early draft. Not actually a social network, more an anti-social network for ‘80s CompSci transplants. :-)

We don’t have meaningful social connections anymore like our parents or their parents geeration had. We are so scattered, that I am unsure how many of my friends are actually friends and how many are just professional contacts. Everytime I switch job, almost 70% of my friends suddenly fall out of contact. Heck, I don’t even know the people who live in next apartments both left, right, up and down on the same building. Socializing with my friends mean, setting up an appointment weeks ahead to see if we can align on a free-slot and this often involves all of us commuting to somewhere and disbanding by 22:00 hours because family, work next morning, chores to do, doctor appointment and other human things. third, let’s look at daygame. if you ask someone out in a social circle/hobby group, that leaves residual social cruft lying around: awkwardness & mutual avoidance. the whole thing is not Done the way it is when you get cleanly rejected on the street. The moral of this story is that secondary and tertiary effects matter. Technology not only affects what we can do with respect to technological issues, it also affects our social behavior. Personal identity is a deep, and deeply meaningful, subject: at some level, what’s more important than what makes you you? Paradoxically, throughout history and across cultures, often personal identity has been a social construct, tied closely to tribe, clan, family, ethnic group, race, caste, class, societal role, and so on - usually in opposition to some Other (“I’m a Capulet, not a Montague”, “I’m a proletarian, not a bourgeois”, etc.)…. ⌘ Read more

🤔 👋 Reconsidering moving Yarn.social’s development back to Github: Speaking of which (I do not forget); @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com and I were discussing over a video call two nights ago, as well as @lyse@lyse.isobeef.org who joined a bit later, about the the whole moved of all of my projects and their source code off of Github. Whilst some folks do understand and appreciate my utter disgust over what Microsoft and Copilot did by blatantly scraping open source software’s codebases without even so much as any attempt at attribution or respecting the licenes of many (if not all?) open source projects.
That being said however, @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com makes a very good and valid argument for putting Yarn.social’s codebases, repositories and issues back on Github for reasons that make me “torn” over my own sense of morality and ethics.
But I can live with this as long as I continue to run and operate my new (yet to be off the ground) company “Self Hosted Pty Ltd” and where it operates it’s own code hosting, servicesa, tools, etc.

India’s skewed ratio of men to women – currently between 900-930 females per 1,000 males – reflects India’s ingrained attitude towards girls. I originally wrote this essay in 2014 or 2015 in a Chinese buffet in Athens, Georgia. I’ve changed some of it and am re-adding it here. I talk about the issues with Utilitarianism and a bad book by Sam Harris.
