Continuing my no-HVAC challenge, this year I’ve been heating myself/my partner by either making a ghetto Kotatsu by placing a crappy old space heater under a blanket and a box or by using an electric blanket.

Q1K3 – Making Of
This was my third time participating in the js13kGames contest. I won in 2018 with Underrun and utterly failed to deliver any compelling gameplay with my 2019 entry Voidcall.

This year’s theme was “Space” – I chose to completely ignore it and instead decided to pay tribute to one of my all time favorite games on its 25th birthday:

The original Quake from 1996.

Calm-computing tip: While ⌥⌘H may clear off a lot of clutter, sometimes you want just one non-full-screened window. Consider making a new Space, moving that window into it, and enjoying its unclutteredness. Spaces are easy to create, re-order, and destroy.

Programs and Equipment I Use
After many requests, here are the programs I use for everything. I’m only putting here programs I consider tried and true and have used for a while.

Software I Use Priorities

I’m about getting things done quickly and having as little space between my thoughts and actions on the computer.

I like having vim-like bindings and prefer running programs in the terminal for simplicity’s sake. That said, I’m very much against the cringey meme that things … ⌘ Read more

I wonder if email would be a reasonable way to enable interaction on twtxt… something like publishing an email address for replies in the preamble of your feed, then like twtxt the rest is up to you, but I could imagine a simple moderation queue that could be checked periodically allowing the admin to move approved comments into some public space… I keep thinking I’ll add activitypub comments to my site but it seems more complex than I care for. Ironically because of available tooling email actually feels simpler for this… of course, there is spam…

Never thought I’d want a 6K monitor, but I’m running VS Code and it sure would be nice to have a little bit more width. The proper layout for the task I’ve been doing is four editors wide, plus some more space on the left for a file picker.

I’m really sad to have (temporarily) taken my monome grid + arc off my desk, but the empty space on my table makes me think better. Hopefully, I’ll be able to appreciate them more when they come back. #updates

Looking for a reason to use Firefox more when developing sites? on macOS it’s the browser that smashes into the least horizontal space. Good if you like having a browser window running all the time. Doubly good if you like running it in Split View.

My furnace broke & the furnace repair guy is snowed in, & it’ll be going below zero tonight. So, I had to run to walmart & buy a bunch of space heaters, & I’ll be up all night making sure nothing catches on fire :(

Bad idea of the day: a database of maps of conceptual spaces that are drawn like maps of physical spaces (ex., xkcd’s map of the internet & Knuppe’s map of the fields of mathematics)

@freemor@freemor.homelinux.net My take on this is… let’s let people ruin the web. Let centralized services control everything. But let us tech savvy people stick together and provide an alternative space for us. A space that’s welcoming to those that want to join and learn. Maybe people will come over when their online actions show real life consequences. There are statistics about decreasing social media use in Generation Z. Maybe they want to learn from us Internet-Dinosaurs :)

Hot take: a hole isn’t the absence of a thing (outer space isn’t a hole, while the hole of a doughnut, full of air, is), but a violation of our expectation of continuity. We expect a full form & get a discontinuity in the middle.
