There appears to be a rush a disgruntled Linux users switching to NetBSD:
https://mastodon.sdf.org/@netbsd/117451701775023949
They even got a ton of new donations (which, funnily, broke their little progress bar):
https://cannot.understand.computer/kunev/p/1791449917.947134
So⦠donations for @netbsd@netbsd over the last few years look like this:
2020 - $46k 2021 - $52k 2022 - $44k 2023 - $60k 2024 - $40k 2025 - $79kAnd in 2026 $120k so far!
And why is all that? Because of this:
Do not commit tainted code to the repository.
If you commit code that was not written by yourself, double check that the license on that code permits import into the NetBSD source repository, and permits free distribution. Check with the author(s) of the code, make sure that they were the sole author of the code and verify with them that they did not copy any other code.
Code generated by a large language model or similar technology, such as GitHub/Microsoftās Copilot, OpenAIās ChatGPT, or Facebook/Metaās Code Llama, is presumed to be tainted code, and must not be committed without prior written approval by core.
https://www.netbsd.org/developers/commit-guidelines.html
This official guideline is much more ātameā and ādiplomaticā than the overall āvibeā (sic) on the Fediverse: NetBSD basically says no to AI as much as possible.
And, apparently, this attracts lots of users and donors. Maybe thereās still some hope after all?

/dev/ulpt0. The netbook doesnāt have a parallel port, so this must be done over USB. NetBSD.escp was created by a little custom ESC/P converter written in C. š„³
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org Yeah, the partition stuff with disklabels is what Iām absolutely not used to. I need to invest more time learning this. Not just using it, but how and where is it represented on disk and all that.
I carry my notebook/netbook around a lot. š Watching movies in bed, for example.
I think Iāll stick with NetBSD for a while. It works surprisingly well, itās new stuff to explore, itās fast, and then thereās this:
https://mastodon.sdf.org/@netbsd/112446618914747900
Gentoo (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Council/AI_policy) might be another idea, but Iām afraid that the little netbook might be too slow for that? Or are there binary packages? No idea, itās been ages since I touched this distro.

In the end, 2025 was the year I finally acted upon the urge to move. I did not do a very thorough analysis of the alternative hosts - what I have been reading about them along the years felt enough, and I easily decided to choose #codeberg. Being hasty like that, alas, was a mistake: I just now found - during this slow and time-consuming process of deciding what and how to migrate - that there is a low repository limit on codeberg: āThe owner has already reached the limit of 100 repositories.ā Iām not complaining, mind you, and those ālucky 100ā that are already there will stay - at least as a sort of backup. 18 rules of Software Engineering
- You will regret complexity when on-call
- Stop falling in love with your own code
- Everything is a trade-off. Thereās no ābestā 3. Every line of code you write is a liability 4. Document your decisions and designs
- Everyone hates code they didnāt write
- Donāt use unnecessary dependencies
- Coding standards prevent arguments
- Write meaningful commit messages
- Donāt ever stop learning new things
- Code reviews spread knowledge
- Always build for maintainability
- Ask for help when youāre stuck
- Fix root causes, not symptoms
- Software is never completed
- Estimates are not promises
- Ship early, iterate often
- Keep. It. Simple.
Solid list, even though 14 is up for debate in my opinion: Software can be completed. You have a use case / problem, you solve that problem, done. Your software is completed now. There might still be bugs and they should be fixed ā but this doesnāt āaddā to the program. Donāt use āsoftware is never doneā as an excuse to keep adding and adding stuff to your code.

@movq@www.uninformativ.de why Gopher to babble, and not just HTTP? I mean, may as well just write plain text files on your machine, and leave them there, right?
Gopher and Mastodon are two completely different things. Thatās where my confusion comes from.

And on a similar note, cross-post from Mastodon:
What I love about HTML and HTTP is that it can degrade rather gracefully on old browsers.
My website isnāt spectacular but I donāt think it looks horrible, either. And itās still usable just fine all the way down to WfW 3.11:
Itās not perfect, but itās usable. And that makes me happy. Almost 30 years of compatibilty.
The biggest sacrifice is probably that I donāt enforce TLS and that HTTP 1.0 has no Host: header, so no vhosts (or rather, everything must come from the default vhost). (Yes, some old browsers send Host:, even though they predate HTTP 1.1. Netscape does, but not IBM WebExplorer, for example.)
(On the other hand, it might completely suck on modern mobile devices. Dunno, I barely use those. š¤Ŗ)
Confession:
Iāve never found microblogging like twtxt or the Fediverse or any other āmodernā social media to be truly fulfilling/satisfying.
The reason is that it is focused so much on people. You follow this or that person, everybody spends time making a nice profile page, the posts are all very āego-centricā. Seriously, it feels like everybody is on an ego-trip all the time (this is much worse on the Fediverse, not so much here on twtxt).
I miss the days of topic-based forums/groups. A Linux forum here, a forum about programming there, another one about a certain game. Stuff like that. That was really great ā and it didnāt even suffer from the need to federate.
Sadly, most of these forums are dead now. Especially the nerds spend a lot of time on the Fediverse now and have abandoned forums almost completely.
On Mastodon, you can follow hashtags, which somewhat emulates a topic-based experience. But itās not that great and the protocol isnāt meant to be used that way (just read the snac2 docs on this issue). And the concept of ālikesā has eliminated lots of the actual user interaction. ā¹ļø

my main itch with the DMs extensions is that these messages are intended to be private, not public information. Thatās why other extensions make sense, but DMs are another kind of feature.
TwiXter, Mastodon, FB and some other services usually hide the DMs in another section, so they are not mixed with the public timeline.
I find the DM topic interesting, I even made an indie experiment for a centralized messaging system here https://github.com/eapl-gemugami/owl.
Although, as Iāve said a few times here, Iām not particularly interested in supporting it on microblogging, as I donāt use it that much. In the rare case Iāve used them, I donāt have to manage public and private keys, and finally none of my acquaintances use encrypted email.
Nothing personal against anyone, and although I like to debate and even fight, itās not the case here. This proposal is the only one allowing DMs on twtxt, and if the community wants it, Iāll support it, with my personal input, of course.
A good approach I could find with a good compromise between compatibility with current clients and keeping these messages private is āhidingā the DMs in comments. For example:
# 2025-04-13T11:02:12+02:00 !<dm-echo https://dm-echo.andros.dev/twtxt.txt> U2FsdGVkX1+QmwBNmk9Yu9jvazVRFPS2TGJRGle/BDDzFult6zCtxNhJrV0g+sx0EIKbjL2a9QpCT5C0Z2qWvw==
@eapl.me@eapl.me When it is up and running, I promise to add it to the specification. I will also include some corrections.
The nature of twtxt does not allow us to selectively hide clients. Itās a problem not with DM, but with any extension.
@prologic@twtxt.net Yes, it is a security hole. All dm-echo messages are readable. I intend it to be a debugging tool. Maybe I can include a warning message. If many of you see that it is a serious problem, I can remove the links.
@xuu@txt.sour.is Itās already much better than Mastodon :P . Maybe we can remove the sender and receiver references with an intermediary register.
I am pleased to share with you the #twtxt version of my important news alerts: https://n8n.andros.dev/webhook/f0cfd6a6-60c8-4183-a26d-120bbd25a046

Checking for example https://watcher.sour.is/api/plain/twt or https://registry.twtxt.org/api/plain/tweets, I donāt know whether this syntax is being used by clients or by people. Is it integrated on Yarn in any way? Genuinely asking to know more about it.
If I might throw a quick thought to those working on the registries, it would be nice to have an endpoint with a valid twtxt output (perhaps cached or dumped to a static file) which a client could point to, helping to discover itās content in a way which is compatible with the twtxt spec.
Taking the first twt I found in https://watcher.sour.is/api/plain/twt as an example:
reddit_world_news https://feeds.twtxt.net/Reddit_World_News/twtxt.txt 2025-03-28T00:29:25Z **China bans US logs. 3 billion dollar[...])
it would be something like
TIME <@NICK URL> TWT
2025-03-28T00:29:25Z <@reddit_world_news https://feeds.twtxt.net/Reddit_World_News/twtxt.txt> **China bans US logs. 3 billion dollar[...])
That way you could watch the latest twts with your client, something similar to what we find on Mastodon: https://mastodon.online/public/local
Some support from the clients to separate these ādiscoveryā content, from your following timeline might be required. š¤
Twtxt was made for nerds, by nerds.
Iād like to change that. Itās by nerds/hackers, for nerds/hackers and friends of these. It doesnāt have to be hacky all the time, as you donāt need to be a nerd to have a blog.
But, for that to happen, someone has to build the tools to improve UX.by design there really is no way to easily discovers others
Yeah, I agree, and although there are directories of email addresses, usually you donāt want that, unless you are a āpublic figureā.
I couldnāt say that a microblogging is a āsocial networkā by default, as a blog is not either. At the same time, people would expect to find new people and conversations, as youād do in a forum.
I think of two features on top of the current spec:
- Clients showing a few posts of what your following are watching but you donāt, so perhaps you find something interesting to follow next. Or that feature of āYour āfollowingsā are following these accounts/peopleā. (Hard to explain in english, but I hope you get the idea)
- Sharing your .txt into some directory, saying āHey, I have this twtxt URL, I want to be discoveredā. Iām thinking of something like the Federated tab on Mastodon.
@prologic@twtxt.net Gemini has an answer for you:
This is a conversation thread from a twtxt network, detailing a userās (movq) frustration with the Mastodon āexport dataā feature and their consideration of self-hosting a fediverse alternative. Hereās a summary:
- movqās initial issue:
- movq is concerned about the volatility of their data on their current Mastodon instance due to a broken āexport dataā feature.
- They contacted the admins, but the issue remains unresolved.
- This led them to contemplate self-hosting.
- movq is concerned about the volatility of their data on their current Mastodon instance due to a broken āexport dataā feature.
- Alternative fediverse software suggestions:
- kat suggests gotosocial as a lightweight alternative to Mastodon.
- movq agrees, and also mentions snac as a potential option.
- kat suggests gotosocial as a lightweight alternative to Mastodon.
- movqās change of heart:
- movq ultimately decides that self-hosting any fediverse software, besides twtxt, is too much effort.
- movq ultimately decides that self-hosting any fediverse software, besides twtxt, is too much effort.
- Resolution and compromise:
- The Mastodon admins attribute the export failure to the size of movqās account.
- movq decides to set their Mastodon account to auto-delete posts after approximately 180 days to manage data size.
- Movq also mentions that they use auto-expiring links on twtxt to reduce data storage.
- The Mastodon admins attribute the export failure to the size of movqās account.
The Mastodon admins say that itās probably because of the size of my account (~600 MB), so the export process times out. And I understand that. Here on twtxt, I always use auto-expiring links when I post images or videos. It just gets too much data otherwise. I think Iāll just set my Mastodon account to auto-delete posts after ~180 days or something like that. Nobody cares about old posts anyway.
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz Oh, yes, itās probably going to be something like gotosocial or snac. Itās got to be as lightweight as possible. (I call this whole thing āMastodonā, but youāre right, thatās not quite correct. š )
@movq@www.uninformativ.de mastodon is probably the worst fedi software to self host tbh, you might wanna check out gotosocial? not to like pull you in another direction but idk masto is just suuuuper heavy lol
I think I should try self-hosting some Mastodon thingy again.
The āexport dataā feature on the Mastodon instance Iām using seems to be broken. Iāve contacted the admins but we couldnāt find the issue ā yet. I donāt want to bother them too much, itās a free service after all.
But this means that everything I post over there is very, very volatile. It could all be gone in 5 minutes and Iāll have no way to restore it. Hmm.
pls elaborate on a āp2p databaseā, āall storyā and āRegistriesā.
My first thought takes me to something like secure-scuttlebutt which itās painful to sync data using clients, and too slow compared to downloading a text file.
Also Iād like for twtxt to avoid becoming an ActivityPub. Works well but itās uses too many resources IMO.
https://kingant.net/2025/02/mastodon-the-cost-of-running-my-own-server/
Iām defending being able to self-host your Web client (like youād do with a Wordpress, twtxt is a micrologging, at the end), instead of federated instances, so in a first thought Iād say Registries have many disadvantages being the first one that someone has to maintain them active.
If we donāt keep insisting on simplify and āThe beauty of twtxt is, you put one file on your server, done. One.ā, then people should just use ActivityPub-based software like Mastodon, PixelFed, etc. which are getting a lot of attention and uses migrating to the fediverse from meta/x here in Denmark over the last couple of months.
tt rewrite in Go and quickly implemented a stack widget for tview. The builtin Pages is similar but way too complicated for my use case. I would have to specify a mandatory name and some additional options for each page. Also, it allows me to randomly jump around between pages using names, but only gives me direct access the first, however, not the last page. Weird. I don't wanna remember names. All I really need is a classic stack. You open a new fullscreen dialog and maybe another one on top of that. Closing the upper most brings you back to the previous one and so on.
Thinking about trying tt. If it really usable i will abandon twtxtdon (service to read twtxt feeds from mastodon client), which currently has only authorization implemented

Iāve polished the CSS style a bit, you can try it here: https://eapl.me/treed/
@prologic@twtxt.net Ha,ha :-) I do not maintain anything! In the context of that post I was just an ordinary citizen. So the āweā refers twice to āwe, the citizens of the Baltic Statesā. (Classical case of social media ātalk at cross purposesā. Now I understand, why they do this Introduction-thing over on mastodon ;-)
@andros@twtxt.andros.dev Awesome! Iāve seen the demo earlier on mastodon, things are getting better and better with each update š Good luck!
