A mate and I had an amazing but also exhausting hike to the highest of the Three Emperor Mountains yesterday with perfect weather conditions. Sunny 18°C, blue sky with barly a cloud and a little welcoming breeze, just beautiful.
Mt. Stuifen is 757 meters above sea level, has a small shelter and a barbie area and is still the most boring one of the three. It’s also the one farthest away from me. Not sure why it has two summit crosses, but both aren’t at the summit. The third, makeshift one at the real summit was gone by now. Four years ago, somebody had cobbled one together and put it up.
We bought our tucker at a local bakery on our way. This was the first time I tried a Teufelsbrezel (lit. devil’s pretzel), a lye pretzel with pepper. Haven’t come across that anywhere else. But I can certainly recommend that, it’s yummy.
We were glad when we were finally back home after some 26 or 27km. I won’t do much today and let my feet rest. Another friend called for a much, much shorter hike tomorrow.

Timeline of Evolution of Twtxt/Yarn.social:
- 2016 – Twtxt created by John Downey: plain text + HTTP = minimalist microblogging
- 2017–2019 – Community builds CLI tools, but adoption remains niche
- 2020 – Yarn.social launched by @prologic@twtxt.net with federation, threading, UI
- 2021–2023 – Pods sync, user mentions, blocking, search, and media support added
- 2024+ – Yarn.social becomes the reference Twtxt platform, with active federated pods
jenny really isn’t well equipped to handle edits of my own twts.
For example, in 2021, this change got introduced:
https://www.uninformativ.de/git/jenny/commit/6b5b25a542c2dd46c002ec5a422137275febc5a1.html
This means that jenny will always ignore my own edits unless I also manually edit its internal “json database”. Annoying.
That change was requested by a user who had the habit of deleting twts or moving them to another mailbox or something. I think that person is long gone and I might revert that change. 🤔
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org I guess the thing is that usernames are no longer needed for many popular things, like WhatsApp. “Just install the app”, done. When I ran my Matrix server for our family, this was the first thing that people were bummed out about: “Oh, this needs a username and a password? Why doesn’t it just work? That’s annoying.”
People are less and less exposed to “low-level” details like this. There was also this story in 2021 about the concept of a “file”: https://www.theverge.com/22684730/students-file-folder-directory-structure-education-gen-z
calendar.txt: Keep your calendar in a plain text file
https://terokarvinen.com/2021/calendar-txt/
It’s a lot of fun to have a calendar system.
@movq@www.uninformativ.de Yeah, the ground was wet here, too. Some sections of esp. smaller paths had turned into mud holes. There are a few notorious spots. Oh well, you just have to press on. :-)
Forest animals also have to do the laundry, they even have a proper clotheshorse! See: https://lyse.isobeef.org/wanderung-zu-den-schurrenhoffuechsen-2021-05-15/07.jpg :-D
@falsifian@www.falsifian.org Neat, I got the principle, so mission accomplished. :-)
I have configured my vim to use a tab width of four. So, I noticed that especially https://www.falsifian.org/blog/2021/06/04/catalytic/reachability_with_stack.cc (but also partially the other C++ file) mixes tabs and spaces for indentation. :-)
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org I am a big fan of “obvious” math facts that turn out to be wrong. If you want to understand how reusing space actually works, you are mostly stuck reading complexity theory papers right now. Ian wrote a good survey: https://iuuk.mff.cuni.cz/~iwmertz/papers/m23.reusing_space.pdf . It’s written for complexity theorists, but some of will make sense to programmers comfortable with math. Alternatively, I wrote an essay a few years ago explaining one technique, with (math-loving) programmers as the intended audience: https://www.falsifian.org/blog/2021/06/04/catalytic/ .
https://terokarvinen.com/2021/calendar-txt/ keep your calendar in a simple text file. I love the idea #cli
@movq@www.uninformativ.de I didn’t run the command as you recommended, but, I wiped things once more, and ran jenny -f
, and this time got:
david@arrakis:~$ jenny -f

Notice that @prologic@twtxt.net’s /6
is there. I found the twtxt then. Kind of odd it didn’t show before.
I think it is a good addition. Similar to how the Fraidycat RSS reader works. Fraidyc.at also support twtxt, but have not seen any updates since 2021…
An official FBI document dated January 2021, obtained by the American association “Property of People” through the Freedom of Information Act.
This document summarizes the possibilities for legal access to data from nine instant messaging services: iMessage, Line, Signal, Telegram, Threema, Viber, WeChat, WhatsApp and Wickr. For each software, different judicial methods are explored, such as subpoena, search warrant, active collection of communications metadata (“Pen Register”) or connection data retention law (“18 USC§2703”). Here, in essence, is the information the FBI says it can retrieve:
Apple iMessage: basic subscriber data; in the case of an iPhone user, investigators may be able to get their hands on message content if the user uses iCloud to synchronize iMessage messages or to back up data on their phone.
Line: account data (image, username, e-mail address, phone number, Line ID, creation date, usage data, etc.); if the user has not activated end-to-end encryption, investigators can retrieve the texts of exchanges over a seven-day period, but not other data (audio, video, images, location).
Signal: date and time of account creation and date of last connection.
Telegram: IP address and phone number for investigations into confirmed terrorists, otherwise nothing.
Threema: cryptographic fingerprint of phone number and e-mail address, push service tokens if used, public key, account creation date, last connection date.
Viber: account data and IP address used to create the account; investigators can also access message history (date, time, source, destination).
WeChat: basic data such as name, phone number, e-mail and IP address, but only for non-Chinese users.
WhatsApp: the targeted person’s basic data, address book and contacts who have the targeted person in their address book; it is possible to collect message metadata in real time (“Pen Register”); message content can be retrieved via iCloud backups.
Wickr: Date and time of account creation, types of terminal on which the application is installed, date of last connection, number of messages exchanged, external identifiers associated with the account (e-mail addresses, telephone numbers), avatar image, data linked to adding or deleting.
TL;DR Signal is the messaging system that provides the least information to investigators.

Last year I did the Advent of Code challenge 👨💻 This year will be no different! 🤣 — Starts in 8hrs from now for me.
Who will join me? 🤔 I will be Yarning all my solutions 😅
🤔 👋 Reconsidering moving Yarn.social’s development back to Github: Speaking of which (I do not forget); @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com and I were discussing over a video call two nights ago, as well as @lyse@lyse.isobeef.org who joined a bit later, about the the whole moved of all of my projects and their source code off of Github. Whilst some folks do understand and appreciate my utter disgust over what Microsoft and Copilot did by blatantly scraping open source software’s codebases without even so much as any attempt at attribution or respecting the licenes of many (if not all?) open source projects.
That being said however, @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com makes a very good and valid argument for putting Yarn.social’s codebases, repositories and issues back on Github for reasons that make me “torn” over my own sense of morality and ethics.
But I can live with this as long as I continue to run and operate my new (yet to be off the ground) company “Self Hosted Pty Ltd” and where it operates it’s own code hosting, servicesa, tools, etc.

@jlj@twt.nfld.uk “A good read: Why I find longtermism hard – […]” -> Interesting! I don’t particularly share that emotional intuition (although my bias probably cuts the other way: I am more moved by interesting projects, and more interesting problems probably also less neglected)–I generally find most problems other people find salient not very moving at all (although probably equally strongly moved by extremely near suffering compared to other people, but with a stronger emotional distance discount). EA makes sense in a very different way to me (phenomenologically, probably closest to philosophical high valence states it evokes).
