Lossless Image Compression in O(n) Time
Introducing QOI — the Quite OK Image Format. It losslessly compresses RGB and
RGBA images to a similar size of PNG, while offering a 20x-50x speedup in
compression and 3x-4x speedup in decompression. All single-threaded, no
SIMD. It’s also stupidly simple.
tl;dr: 300 lines of C, single header,

benchmark results here.

I’ve got to use macOS by nature of my work. Lately I’m increasingly down on this. Here I will not re-hash anything about the current state of Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem. I don’t care.
Wanting to take a trip down nostolgia lane, however (to when I was 2 years old) I thought I’d install Mac OS System 7. What follows is a quick guide for doing the sa … ⌘ Read more

@prologic@twtxt.net I am trying to cut costs, so I deleted all my Digital Ocean droplets. For a month I will be using a free s390x VPS, so I needed to adapt some of my Docker images, scripts and configurations for that architecture. Also took another chance with Traefik Proxy, I ditched it long ago for nginx-proxy, but this time I made it work. #h5nn5tq

Would online dating without images lead to deeper, more human connections? I.e. only descriptions of people. If yes, is it different because of molochian reasons? More beautiful people have no problem showing their faces, so not showing ones face is seen as a low-status signal at some point. Counter: The idea of deeper, more human connections is in itself flawed, most mating choices are the result of a combination of class/status signals and physical attractiveness anyway.
@prologic@twtxt.net an added benefit of the avatar:
would be the user could put their gravatar/libravatar image url like https://key.sour.is/avatar/01bc6186d015218c23dec55447e502e669ca4c61c7566dfcaa1cac256108dff0
@prologic@twtxt.net Could the config be embeded into the head comment of the twtxt.txt file and parsed out? If it also had an avatar:
field that pointed to where the avatar image is located it can be almost all self contained.
@prologic@twtxt.net huh.. true.. the email is md5/sha256 before storing.. if twtxt acted as provider you would store that hash and point the SRV record to the pod. .. to act as a client it would need to store the hash and the server that hosts the image.
@xuu@txt.sour.is @prologic@twtxt.net something that would be interesting would be libravatar for the user image. i made one that does the same for a profile cover image.

Building docker image with name and tag …
Just took a raw photo with Halide for the first time. It looks pretty awful compared to its companion JPEG because it’s horribly noisy. Not sure what magic turns awful raws into better-than-JPEG images. Probably lots of know-how.
@kas@enotty.dk I probably get a slightly-suboptimal lossily-compressed image. Or maybe I get the same image that I would have had I not bothered to give it a preset hint.
@kas@enotty.dk is pretty great, but there’s no equivalent widely-available functionality for background images, which is a real pity. Just imagine — hero images that take up half the space!
I tried cwebp -preset photo -o foo.webp foo.jpeg
on a preview image and it was imperceptibly worse at the sizes I expected to show it. Then again, I don’t really care that you can’t read the nutrition labels on a jar in the background of the subject.

Bunny-Girl Senpai is an interesting show. It seems to be going for a theme with the various arcs: each one seems to be about how communications media change our behavior & self-image by exerting social pressure with expectations.

Bad idea of the day: a robot that spills or dribbles paint onto canvas until the image is recognized as an object, then names the painting after that object.
