In-reply-to » @connorabruce@georgetakei I would definitely agree mental health in general is a *huge* concern. It is still very hard to find good therapists that are covered by insurance. And obviously people dealing with gender dysphoria are subject to a disproportionate amount of harassment and bullying which could provoke an inappropriate response.

@ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social@georgetakei@universeodon.com No amount of harassment or bullying is justification for heading into an elementary school and killing kids. And there is no evidence to suggest any of the shooters were receiving any such abuse. I think we have to address the obvious fact, that people who are mentally ill, should not own firearms; and people who are taking a cocktail of drugs, that may affect their thinking and personality, should definitely not own any firearms.

In-reply-to » @connorabruce@georgetakei I mean, obviously the Republicans' attack on trans rights and refusal to provide gender-affirming care definitely can cause a mental health crisis, but a single incident is not much to draw a position from.

@ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social@georgetakei@universeodon.com Several of these trans shootings occurred before any such legislation was passed, this is just the latest. And she was certainly mentally ill for some time before becoming trans, and deciding to enter a school and shoot dead children as a means of suicide. But the failing goes far deeper than that, these events are becoming more common, therefore we must be doing something as a society, directly or indirectly, to encourage such attacks.

In-reply-to » The Governor just called the school shooting in Tennessee a “tragic situation.”

@georgetakei@universeodon.com Seeing as the shooter was trans, is this a failure of gun control or a failure of mental health support? And I am guessing this is the part where all discussion on this topic dies, as the shooter doesn’t fit the demographic usually associated with shootings; although, perhaps not as true as it was with the mass shootings of late.
