NetNewsWire has been working out pretty well as my primary news source over the last couple days. I’m kind of grossed out by just how much I relied on Twitter in that role over the last several years.
We got enough snow overnight that I was able to get in an afternoon sled with the kids today. Got a real workout climbing the hill we go to though! Had no problem closing the 30 minute exercise ring on my watch.
I have to hand it to our local Waste Management, replacing the garbage bin they accidentally cracked last week was a painless process. I contacted them via web chat after I discovered it, they scheduled for today, and delivered the replacement immediately after picking up this week’s garbage.
40 minute 350 calorie indoor ride complete.
@bender@twtxt.net Interesting that it performed so poorly when your tried your own relay. How many clients were accessing it at once? Overall I’m definitely not sold on it yet, while I do like fiddling around with new protocol stuff I am also very wary of the crypto-libertarian ethos that is driving the Nostr project.
Figured out a few more things with Damus/Nostr today. Set up Lightning payments and did a 21 sat microtransaction. Successfully authenticated my ID with my own domain. Started finding interesting people to connect with and branching out from their followers. Also tried out Iris in the web browser.
Damus is an interesting app, but adoption and discovery are big issues right now. Crypto-dross is dominating the global timeline and nothing about the available content is going to be remotely appealing to a typical social media consumer.
Damus is pretty interesting, but the global feed is already quite the hellscape. I have yet to see anyone that I know from other forms of social media and signal to noise is quite low so far.
Digging into all the various Mastodon/Activity Pub alternatives today. It’s cool to see so much development activity in this space right now.
Twitter broke third party app access today. So no more catching up on my feed to see what’s going on there when I wake up. I’m definitely ready to shift over to Ivory and Mastodon once it’s out.
Three and a half hours until midnight and people are already setting off fireworks in the distance. Weird and a little annoying.
🍿Top Gun: Maverick was pretty entertaining. I’m glad Val Kilmer was still able to participate in spite of his real life health issues.
Busy day with the family! Entertained the cousins for a while in the middle of the day and we’ve still got to prep for tomorrow’s Christmas Eve gathering with most of my wife’s side of the family.
@prologic@twtxt.net is there a version of yarnd that has the toggle mentioned in this feature request? I updated to the current yarnd:dev container on octobloc.xyz for the first time since my original setup (which listed as Edge rather than 0.15.1@5f939785 like now), but it looks like it’s probably not incorporated yet.
Twitter is now banning links to virtually all social media. What a complete and utter meltdown from Elmo.
With Twitter getting more hellish by the day, I’ve been tracking down more people I want to keep following on Mastodon or via rss to twtxt feeds. Yarn.social continues to be great and octobloc.xyz will remain my primary point of microblogging.
Our gutters are all filled with ice so I worked on clearing them a bit today, but it was mostly hopeless. More snow is on the way too unfortunately.
Big snow day. I think we’re approaching 12” in our neighborhood now. I shoveled our driveway twice already and actually broke out the snowblower to clear part of the street by the curb and our mailboxes. It works great when the snow is powdery, but clogs up fast with wetter snow like we’re getting now.
Another snowy late November day and it looks like we’re going to be getting at least a little snowfall almost every day this week. Don’t think there’s any danger of not having a white Christmas this year.
The Arc browser is the Chrome replacement I’ve been waiting for
Good overview of the new Chrome based browser project that’s been in development over the last year. I haven’t tried it yet and in fact this is the first I’ve heard about it, but I’m always interested in browser projects that have a new approach to the web so I signed up to try the service.
⚽️ I like what I’m seeing from Ecuador so far. 1 - 0 over Qatar after putting away the penalty. Completely dominating the final third.
Was not expecting to learn today that the four University of Idaho undergrads that were tragically murdered a few days ago were all killed with an edged weapon. The Moscow, ID police have no suspect in custody, have announced no persons of interest, and told the university community don’t worry, this was an aberration you’re perfectly safe.🤔
My Twitter archive actually came through today so I guess not all extra services have been shutdown.
New glasses have arrived and they’re an improvement for general distance, but maybe not computer screen reading distance (which I need way more of the time). We’ll see how they settle in.
Had my first eye exam in forever last night and ordered some new glasses now that I have an updated prescription. I went with frames that are pretty similar to what I already use, but image mockup technology has improved a lot since the last time I ordered so I amused my kids with pictures of myself with wild frames first.
@prologic@twtxt.net I’m a bit confused about how the two different reply icon buttons behave. The speech bubble with a plus doesn’t supply a post id tag to the edit field at all, while the double speech (conversation?) icon supplies the id tag of the post you’re replying to rather than the original root. Shouldn’t both options supply some kind of id tag to the edit field?
