I received the following message from our (Australian MP) Julian Simmonds
yesterday via Email (because apparently politicians don’t know how to use Social Media 🤦‍♂️ or how to write Blog posts 🤣):

Your Privacy and right to criticise Government is at risk!

I have been fighting for tougher rules on big tech and new laws that back Australians online. As a result of my advocacy, our government is putting in place online protections that hold social media companies to account and put the power back in the hands of parents.

Under these new powers, social media companies will be declared as publishers, meaning they are liable for any defamatory remarks, unless they actively assist to identify anonymous trolls and resolve disputes.

For parents who have often felt helpless, this means an avenue to unmask the troll targeting and bullying their kids online.

This sends a strong message to those who make toxic comments and slurs online; that they cannot hide! They are no longer anonymous behind the keyboard and will face the consequences of their actions, just as they would in the real world thanks to our new legislation.

@david@netbros.com That’s right. This is utter bullshit and such a crock of crap. This is where all these sorts of things start. First you paint/draw/write a narrative of “OMG save the children!”, but really what you’re doing is building backdoors, crafting laws to suite yourself. Why? So you can gain more power and control and ownership over the people. It’s actually the same goddamn narrative as is being presented in the Yarn @darch@twtxt.net posted a few hours ago at #rwlmg7q 😢 🤬 😡

@screem@yarn.yarnpods.com That’s right, this is a very dangerous time we live in politically and even environmentally.

Rest assured, “Trolling” is not illegal in any way so you can’t be held liable for something that isn’t actually against any known laws. Defamatory remarks however are a different thing entirely, and something that is illegal – But of course proving that something is defamatory is hard, because you have to prove or disprove that the remarks are true or false.
