at first i dismissed the idea of likes on twtxt as not sensible…like at all — then i considered they could just be published in a metadata field (though that field could get really unruly after a while)
retwts are plausible, as “RE: https://example.com/twtxt.txt#abcdefg”, the hash could even be the original timestamp from the feed to make it human readable/writable, though im extremely wary of clogging up timelines
i thought quote twts could be done extremely sensibly, by interpreting a mention+hash at the end of the twt differently to when placed at the beginning — but the twt subject extension requires it be at the beginning, so the clean fallback to a normal reply i originally imagined is out of the question — it could still be possible (reusing the retwt format, just like twitter!) but i’m not convinced it’s worth it at that point
is any of this in the spirit of twtxt? no, not in the slightest, lmao

well (insert stubborn emoji here) 😛, word blog comes from weblog, and microblogging could derivate from ‘smaller weblog’. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/articles/Microblogging
I’d differentiate it from sharing status updates as it was done with ‘finger’ or even a BBS. For example, being able to reply; create new threads and sharing them on a URL is something we could expect from ‘Twitter’, the most popular microbloging model (citation needed)
I like to discuss it, since conversations usually are improved if we sync on what we understand for the same words.
I’d need to think about it deeply, but at a first sight, nanoblogging would be a simple text (like the original twtxt spec, aimed for TUIs), and microblogging (like Twitter was a few years ago), would be about sharing texts, images, videos, GIFs, links, and perhaps Markdown styling.
Why? You have shorter messages than in a blog, but you may add almost anything you could do in a blog.
Buuut… who knows?

that’s a fair point.
Perhaps, since Twitter in 2006 never implemented read flags, every derivative microblogging system never saw that as an expected feature. This is curious because Twitter started with SMS, where on our phones we can mark messages as read or unread.
I think it all comes from the difference between reading an email (directed to you) vs. reading public posts (like a blog or a ‘wall,’ where you don’t mark posts as read). It’s not necessary to mark it as ‘read’, you just jump over it.
Reading microblogging posts in an email program is not common, I think, and I haven’t really used it, so I cannot say how it works, and whether it would be better for me or not.
However, I’ve used Thunderbird as a feed reader, and I understand the advantages when reading blog posts.
About read flags being simple, well… we just had a discussion this morning about how tracking read messages would require a lot of rethinking for clients such as timeline where no state is stored. Even considering some kind of ‘notification of unread messages or mentions’ is not expected for those minimalist client, so it’s an interesting compromise to think about.

Btw about social: found very interesting thing about twitter:
The legal basis that X asserts in the filing is not terribly interesting. But what is interesting is that X has decided to involve itself at all, and it highlights that you do not own your followers or your account or anything at all on corporate social media, and it also highlights the fact that Elon Musk’s X is primarily a political project he is using to boost, or stifle, specific viewpoints and help his friends. In the filing, X’s lawyers essentially say—like many other software companies, and, increasingly, device manufacturers as well—that the company’s terms of service grant X’s users a “license” to use the platform but that, ultimately, X owns all accounts on the social network and can do anything that it wants with them.

Bluesky, a new social media platform and AT Protocol, is unsurprisingly running up against the same challenges and limitations that Flickr, Twitter and many other social media platforms faced in the 2000s: passwords! ⌘ Read more
my twitter feed blew up yesterday. I typically get some hundred views. but the post I did yesterday did get a lot of traction, lot’s of replies and feedback etc.
@prologic@twtxt.net Yeah, apparently it was a bit of old new (according to twitter), but still - looking forward to have a risc-v desktop system. :)
Hopefully it’ll not be too long until something like that hits the market with a price that I can pay for it.
I do have 2 risk-v devices already, one mangopi (like a raspberrypi zero), and one HiFive1 Rev B (like a arduino).
The Hifive rev B was a waste of time and money for me - but I bought it anyways, too ‘embedded’ for my liking, so not easy to make things work on that. The mangopi is perfect, got all my desktop stuff set up on that running debian.

Trying to wrap my head around webfinger..
my first thoughts about it were that a subject of acct:me@sour.is would have a listing of rel’s for the different accounts that are related to me (ie. yarn, salty, twitter, mastodon, etc…)
but maybe my thinking is at the wrong level.. that each of those accounts would be on a subject level and the rels are describing different aspects of that account. so i would have salty:acct:xuu@sour.is, twitter:acct:xuu, mastodon:acct:xuu@chaos.social, yarn:acct:xuu@ev.sour.is and then i could have a main acct:me@sour.is that links them together as aliases.
I found okta will do something similar with its accounts to show as okta:acct:user@domain so maybe I am on to something?

⌘ Read more
