Spent basically the entire day (except for the mandatory walk) fighting with Python’s type hints. But, the result is that my widget toolkit now passes mypy --strict.
I really, really don’t want to write larger pieces of software without static typing anymore. With dynamic typing, you must test every code path in your program to catch even the most basic errors. pylint helps a bit (doesn’t need type hints), but that’s really not enough.
Also, somewhere along the way, I picked up a very bad (Python) programming style. (Actually, I know exactly where I picked that up, but I don’t want to point the finger now.) This style makes heavy use of dicts and tuples instead of proper classes. That works for small scripts, but it very quickly turns into an absolute mess once the program grows. Prime example: jenny. 😩
I have a love-hate relationship with Python’s type hints, because they are meaningless at runtime, so they can be utterly misleading. I’m beginning to like them as an additional safety-net, though.
(But really, if correctness is the goal, you either need to invest a ton of time to get 100% test coverage – or don’t use Python.)
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org no wonder I picked that cake (albeit coincidentally), I adore almonds, and hazelnuts! Your teammates are absolutely amazing, dude! A very nice project farewell! On leaving places I have a small anecdote.
I know someone who on 3 February 2004 left his job to go elsewhere. At the time his teammates threw a party, and gave him a very nice portable storage. Twenty days later, he returned, and jokingly they asked him for the storage, and money spent on farewell party back. I heard, from a close source, that he gave them his middle finger, but don’t quote me on that. 😂😂😂
@thecanine@twtxt.net Not bad. 🥳 Fingers crossed that they actually do it. 🤞
@movq@www.uninformativ.de using gopher also limits tenth fold the amount of bystanders you will get. I think a finger .plan would probably have a bigger audience. :-D :-P
@bender@twtxt.net To add some context, I’m not one to write open letters often, nor do I expect to become some kind of martyr, the European Union will unite over, to fight Google.
However Google did loose to Epic Games in European courts, that determined Google maintains a monopoly over its Play Store, restricting competition and developers choices. And pretty much right after courts determined this, Google gives them the middle finger and proposes changes, that would destroy F-droid - the biggest and really the only competing app store, that’s actually competing and not just taking the apps from Googles Play Store and passing them on.
There are many more qualified and likable parties, who already reached out to them, with these concerns, I just think it’s important everyone impacted by this, politely contacts them too, to convey this is not just some niche non-issue, a few IT nerds made up.
Big storm coming in tonight, fingers crossed!
@prologic@twtxt.net ah! Well, keeping fingers crossed for you and family on that RV, for sure! 🤞🏻
@dce@hashnix.club Nope. 😃 What’s that genre called? Sounds like old horror movies from the 70’ies (or it could be a soundtrack to Salad Fingers, if anyone remembers that).
Really, it won’t be long until I give the world the finger and move everything behind Gopher or Gemini. It’ll be a while until the bots find me there.
@movq@www.uninformativ.de Oh boy! Fingers crossed.
That’s what you get when playing with bleeding edges. :-D
Hahaha, I’m sure there were well over one thousand fireflies today! Basically at all times I could watch at least 15 of them around me. At better spots where one could see a few meters into the forest, there were easily 30 individuals, probably more. One even landed on my small finger. I didn’t feel anything at all, but my finger glowed. :-) Awwww! After a 20 meters ride it took off.
But it looks like I have to go already at 21:30 at sunset the next days. Today, I left the house at 22:00 and all the above happend in the first half. The second half of the walk was rather boring, maybe just around 70 glowworms in total. The extremely busy route yesterday was virtually dead this time I came around. They all have already gone to sleep, or something like that.
I also encountered two toads. I nearly stepped on the first one, but it luckily jumped to the side in time. No animals harmed.

well (insert stubborn emoji here) 😛, word blog comes from weblog, and microblogging could derivate from ‘smaller weblog’. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/articles/Microblogging
I’d differentiate it from sharing status updates as it was done with ‘finger’ or even a BBS. For example, being able to reply; create new threads and sharing them on a URL is something we could expect from ‘Twitter’, the most popular microbloging model (citation needed)
I like to discuss it, since conversations usually are improved if we sync on what we understand for the same words.

i love posting to my own personal youtube site i can just do whatever tf i want. no content ID here just vibes and finger crossing that i don’t get a cease and desist one day
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org 31°C here, feels like 33°C, with a lovely 75% of humidity. It has been raining, on and off (to make matter “better”) the whole day until now. No horses here, but if you go outside you will smell the same smell of farm animals (like goats, or pigs). That’s because two or three kilometres from here there are private farms, and when the wind blows in such way, well, we are reminded of their existence.
I haven’t left the house, so it feels well under air conditioning. In two more hours I will call it quits from the work day, and will have to dash to the grocery to get supplies for tonight’s meal (arroz con gandules). I will let you know how it truly feels out there then. :-D
For those swollen fingers, nothing better than a mildly cold shower! Oh, and paws off the keyboard! :-P
When we passed a few horses in the forest, there was really strong soup odor in the air. It didn’t smell like horse at all, but soup. Maybe they’ve been soup horses, chickens were out of stock.
29°C, zero wind, extremely humid, luckily the sun was behind the clouds. I’m soaking wet, sweat ran down in streams and dripped in my eyes, it burned a bit. The sky is getting a little dark, I hope the thunderstorm and rain are really arriving here later. Rain had always been finally cancelled the couple last days.
I’m gotta go cool off my fingers now, they’re swollen from the heat.
Perhaps it was me. I was just testing finger clients for Windows before uploading.

So, a husky will pull. Tried all kinds of training for it, but his pulling does not go away, often it’s OK when we walk with a regular collar, but he can also pull crazy hard with that - he just does not care if he chokes. when I walk with harness - he can pull as much as he wants\needs (since we both have one). But the problem is that he still pulls as hard on leash, tried one of those ‘slip’ leashes for a good while, but he could not care less.
So today I bought something else (see attached image (not my dog in the image)). And this thing is magical, honestly.
He does not like to have it on much yet, but I can now hold the leash with one finger. And the thing is that when you use this - they most likely will learn from that and walk nice on regular leash as well.
So yeah, just wanted to mention it, since it works better then anything else I’ve tried.

Ah, no; and there we have a good example of finger’s poor discoverability! It matches my email address, though: echo a.9srv.net | sed ’s/./@/’
No, totally not useful. 🤣 I mean, the finger protocol is pretty trivial, and it’d be fun to add, but doesn’t replace anything you’re doing.
I like finger, but outside of a shared system, the complete lack of discoverability is pretty fatal.
With the finger server specifically? No idea, it’s a toy. I’d honestly forgotten I had it on until someone mentioned finger.farm and I was inspired to poke at it again.
