** Fall foliage, music, games, and text editors **
Turning to fall. While playing a little squash this morning one of the pros that hangs out at the courts asked if he could give me and one of my kids some tips. He then proceeded to spend 40 mins or so with us. It was honestly rad. Totally changed how I approach playing squash in that little time. I’m excited to play more this winter.

Sam Whited: 2025-09-30 Trolley Barn Contra Post Mortem
The first time I DJed for a Contra Dance1 was at Inman Park’s
famous Trolley Barn.
At the time I was DJing in the way other social dances are normally DJed: I had
a laptop, I played a song, everyone danced.
No fancy mixing, or effects: the most technical thing I did was loop 32 bar
sections of music to stretch it out until the caller was ready to end the dance.

[This happened already and was recorded. Description from the YT recording]

Ā«This year at PyCon UK, you’re warmly invited to a world premiere: Ada, a brand-new play inspired by Ada Lovelace, written by Emily Holyoake, and staged as a rehearsed reading by Nottingham-based theatre company Chronic Insanity

ā€˜You may turn the handle, and I will whirr and calculate without error!’

Decades before the first computers are built, Ada imagines machines that can do anything, even compose beautiful pieces of music. Far beyond Ada’s future, a learning machine called Ginny breaks free of her routine and tests the boundaries of what ought to be possible.

Ada is an intricate re-telling of the life and legacy of Ada Lovelace, pioneer of computing, paralleling her history with a contemporary story about the potential of artificial intelligence.

Cast and Crew:

Ada: Ruth Page
Babbage: Jamie Richard-Stewart
Lady Byron/Anna: Lynne Payne
Ginny: Natalie Patuzzo
Jasper: Ben GilbertĀ»

I used to be able to sell my music anywhere in the world - and I have managed to send CDs to quite remote places, or kingdoms with nefarious regimes… but now, well, there is one country where I can not ship cassettes or CDs to: the USA šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø.

It’s not like I’m expecting any loss: I rarely sell music, and when I do it is rarely to the states (I don’t know why, I think my stuff ought to be way more popular! 😁). But still, it is disheartening to see there is now an effective wall, a country where I won’t be able to (directly) reach. Congratulations to everyone involved.

[PS: if you’re puzzled about what is this all about - a number of European countries, including Portugal, won’t be shipping stuff to the US due to legal uncertainty regarding Trump’s tariffs.]

In-reply-to » OH, FUCK ME DEAD! On the way home from today's walk I saw easily 800 fireflies! Yes, over eight hundred! That was absolutely amazing. First time this year and already this many. Crazy! They were just fricking everywhere in the entire forest. I counted to one hundred and then stopped. The darker it got, the more fireflies came out and glowed around. :-) There were spots where in under ten seconds I counted 20 glowworms. Super sick. Soooo beautiful. <3

I went to the firefly party again and checked them out on a different path. Boys and girls, there were so many of them! Apparently, I took the wrong turn and the numbers dropped. Still several hundreds if not over a thousand, but I’m spoiled now.

On the way there I noticed an absolutely spectacular sunset. However, I didn’t bring my camera. Should have peaked through the closed shutters before I left.

It turns out the disco music from the next town over wasn’t only audible in the forest but is also free-to-air in my bed. :-( It’s earplugs time.

In-reply-to » Wanna read something very scary?

@prologic@twtxt.net That’s an interesting premise in that article:

The fun has been sucked out of the process of creation because nothing I make organically can compete with what AI already produces—or soon will.

This is like saying it’s pointless to make music yourself because some professional player/audio engineer does a better job. Really, there’s always someone or something that’s better than you at a particular job.

If we focus too much on ā€œcompetitionā€, then yes, you can just stop doing anything. I don’t know how common this mindset is, especially among artists or creative people. šŸ¤” I would have assumed that many writers, for example, simply enjoy the process of writing. In-reply-to » When will the flat UI craze end? Can I get my buttons, scrollbars, and toolbars back, please?

@movq@www.uninformativ.de Yeah, most of the graphical applications are actually KDE programs:

  • KMail – e-mail client
  • Okular – PDF viewer
  • Gwenview – image viewer
  • Dolphin – file browser
  • KWallet – password manager (I want to check out pass one day. The most annoying thing is that when I copy a password, it says that the password has been modified and asks me whether I want to save the changes. I never do, because the password is still the same. I don’t get it.)
  • KPatience – card game
  • Kdenlive – video editor
  • Kleopatra – certificate manager

Qt:

  • VLC – video player
  • Psi – Jabber client (I happily used Kopete in the past, but that is not supported anymore or so. I don’t remember.)
  • sqlitebrowser – SQLite browser

Gtk:

  • Firefox – web browser
  • Quod Libet – music player (I should look for a better alternative. Can’t remember why I had to move away from Amarok, was it dead? There was a fork Clementine or so, but I had to drop that for some unknown reason, too.)
  • Audacity – audio editor
  • GIMP – image editor

These are the things that are open right now or that I could think of. Most other stuff I actually do in the terminal.

In the pastā„¢, I used the Python KDE4 bindings. That was really nice. I could pass most stuff directly in the constructor and didn’t have to call gazillions of setters improving the experience significantly. If I ever wanted to do GUI programming again, I’d definitely go that route. There are also great Qt bindings for Python if one wanted to avoid the KDE stuff on top. The vast majority I do for myself, though, is either CLI or maybe TUI. A few web shit things, but no GUIs anymore. :-)
