@movq@www.uninformativ.de Right now I am using my ai coded twtxt api to edit the twtxt.txt file directly with the api. As well as my ai coded twtxt desktop and mobile clients to go with it. Though the code at least for the desktop client is just a single python file. Plus I do know in the future it might be unmaintable.
I am not the type of person to be like āwow do everything in ai this is so greatā
The entire reason I tried ai coding a twtxt client was because in an irc channel someone was like ātwtxt is so simple even ai can do itā and then I get a five year old (the ai) to do it and because its simple its actually done. I donāt excpect it to be the best ever compared to the human coded twtxt stuff but at least it gets me back on twtxt. I donāt like every other twtxt client that much.
@david@daiwei.me Easy, Twtxt is similar to IRC. If you publish the password here, e.g. hunter2, only @itsericwoodward@itsericwoodward.com will be able to read it as it is his. See?!
Also apologies. If you want to chat to me in more ~realtime, Iām more active on something weāre calling Parley ā A truly decentralised federated IRC chat system. You have to spin up your own instance (ideally) or join someone elseās, but otherwise you use a normal IRCv3 capable client, but the entire ānetworkā (so to speak) automatically forms a decentralized mesh.
@prologic@twtxt.net @david@daiwei.me Maybe in a month or so when I have free mental capacity again, I might take a look. Happy IRCing!
š Calling all decentralised enthusiasts that still remembers and use IRC š
Please come join us in a new, truely, decentralised IRC-based chat experience by standing up your own Parley instance on your own domain (bring your own OIDC auth or use the built-in).
Pick your favourite IRCv3-compatible client (thereās heaps out there!).
And peer with either me james@mills.io or Admin -> Peers -> Add mills.io or @david@daiwei.me via david@ratha.us or simply ratha.us (in Admin -> Peers -> Add).
See you online! š¤ #decentralised #irc #chat
I have (finally) built a fully e2e working purely decentralised and federated IRC-compatible chat server. It is currently a PoC, but itās already working quite well. Itās inspired partly by the work we did with Salty Chat in terms of Discovery and Federation. Some screenshots of a normal IRC client irssi showing off how it works in a local e2e setup:

jenny stuff aside, I received zero bug reports or code contributions since leaving GitHub in 2018.
How many tickets and merge requests did you get before moving to your own server?
Hm, these were probably some of the more active projects:
- https://github.com/vain/lariza/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aclosed
- https://github.com/vain/pdfPres/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aclosed
- https://github.com/vain/xiate/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aclosed
So itās not a ton of stuff and there are many āissuesā I opened myself, but itās certainly more than these days.
Havenāt used
git send-emaileven once. I definitely have to look into that soon. Wanted to do that for several years. I typically upload the patch to my server and send a link via IRC.
git send-email is good for sending patches to a mailing list (because then the individual patches can be discussed easily), but since those are dying out as well, it loses its appeal. If you want to send patches to a single person, just sending the link to your repo is far easier. š¤
jenny stuff aside, I received zero bug reports or code contributions since leaving GitHub in 2018.
@movq@www.uninformativ.de Finally, your software is just perfect and finished by now, no need to report non-existing bugs or send in code changes. :-) How many tickets and merge requests did you get before moving to your own server?
I have to admit that I use git format-patch so rarely, I always have to pull it up from my shell history. Havenāt used git send-email even once. I definitely have to look into that soon. Wanted to do that for several years. I typically upload the patch to my server and send a link via IRC.
Maybe I was just very unlucky, but my experience is that you can perfectly ignore people and their work who only do it for the āfameā. Itās almost always been from inferior quality to say the least.
@prologic@twtxt.net hear hear! IRC all the way. š
@movq@www.uninformativ.de I donāt. but i do use IRC so hmmm š§
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org How many people are still using XMPP? š¤ Iād expect the number to just as low as IRC users? š¤
@prologic@twtxt.net I linked you some of my findings on the twtxt.app on IRC. The main problem is the hashing. Totally broken. But you have got to give it some thought, because GitHub hosting of the feed is tricky (even more so if they are CNAMEing their domain to it). It is also finicky because Pages is auto-enabled on username.github.io, so actions must run each time you twt.
@GabesArcade@gabesarcade.com LOL You can Email me, hit me up on Signal, orc IRC. Take ya pick Iām around š
@kiwu@twtxt.net jump on IRC and tell us! Server irc.mills.io, on 6697 (TLS), join #lobby, then private message (I am quark). :-P
Most of the time, I take a very very long time to do anything. If I say, for example, āIāll build an IRC Web Clientā, that may not happen for weeks, if not months, until my sub conscience has has time to process everything. Itās like basically a āfeelingā of internal readiness. I never talk through it, never actively think about it, it just happens.
@movq@www.uninformativ.de I see problems with that, yes. Case in point:

It is harder to regain ownership of an IRC channel than crossing the Mexico/US border. š
@xuu@txt.sour.is as long as I see you on IRC, bouncer or not, I donāt worry. Weird, isnāt it? Glad you are OK, Winterās coming!
Thank you for the encouragement and love and kind words, @lyse@lyse.isobeef.org @movq@www.uninformativ.de @bender@twtxt.net @doesnm@doesnm.p.psf.lt and others along the way Iām not sure of their feed uris š Iāll keep at it, but for the time being I will keep my distance, mostly off IRC, because I donāt have the energy to spare in that kind of engagement (what//if the worst happens, itās so draining). I need to remember what I ever did any of this for, it was back in ~2020 and I wanted really to build small interconnected communities that any non ātech savvyā person (more or less) could also benefit from ane enjoy. Even if there are aspects of the specs weāve built/extended over time that arenāt āperfectāā¢, theyāre āgood enoughā⢠that theyāve last 5+ years (I believe this is 6 years running now). I want to spend a bit of time going back to why I did any of this in the the first place, and get a little micro-SaaS offering going (barely covering running costs) so encourage more folks to run pods, and thus twtxt feeds and grow the community ever so slightly. Other than that, I plan to get the specs āin orderā to a point (with @movq@www.uninformativ.de and @lyse@lyse.isobeef.orgās help) where I hope theyāll stand the test of time ā like SMTP.
Thank you all ! š

@movq@www.uninformativ.de this is so real⦠i think we need to bring back topic focused groups but like with a little off topic side of things just in case people wanna go off topic. so the optionās there but the intent is the topic! microblogging isnāt best for this yeah. i think this is part of why IRC still goes strong for many tech people
@bender@twtxt.net I use it. Itās not the feature I use the most in the fediverse, but I communicate this way with several friends. For example, itās the main way I talk to the original creator of the twtxt-el repository, the way people greet me for the first time or the way they notify me of some bugs in the software I maintain. I can even tell you that itās the main way I talk to some maintainers of the Emacs community. If there are any of you reading my words, speak up!
Why not have the same? There are things I want to say to @prologic@twtxt.net in private, why should I have to send him an email or private IRC? Or an public twt.
Of course, hereās a topic weāve already talked about: what is twtxt for you? For me it will always be a social network, in microblogging format, but an asynchronous way of communicating. And having a tool to control visibility is basic š
I look forward to hearing from you @eapl.me@eapl.me !

irc.mills.io running behind Caddy Layer 4. However I don't terminate TLS at the edge in this case.
@prologic@twtxt.net want to share the snippet of your Caddyfile for irc.mills.io?
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz At the core, you need an ngircd.conf like this:
[Global]
Name = your.irc.server.com
Password = yourfancypassword
Listen = 0.0.0.0
Ports = 6667
AdminInfo1 = Well, me.
AdminInfo2 = Over here!
AdminEMail = forget.it@example.invalid
[Options]
Ident = no
PAM = no
[SSL]
CertFile = /etc/ssl/acme/your.irc.server.com.fullchain.pem
KeyFile = /etc/ssl/acme/private/your.irc.server.com.key
DHFile = /etc/ngircd/dhparam.pem
Ports = 6669
Start it and then you can connect on port 6667. (The SSL cert/key must be managed by an external tool, probably something like certbot or acme-client.)
Iām assuming OpenBSD here. Havenāt tried it on Linux lately, let alone Docker. š

is it like⦠ethical to offer access to certain self hosted services as patreon exclusives. like i wanna offer the IRC client/bouncer i hosted which seems ok i think because iāve seen pico.sh offer their instances of that as paid services. but the other ones i have in mind are alt web frontends for stuff like imgur and pinterest. and i just feel weird about it for some reason. idk iām trying to think of ways to support my server stuff but every time i come up with something it feels weird
@movq@www.uninformativ.de i tried ngircd but couldnāt figure it out T__T i left it at the web client and bouncer for now but i might toy with an IRC server another time!
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz ngircd is nice: https://ngircd.barton.de/ You can absolutely host this on your server for you and your friends (Iāve been doing that for a very long time). Actually peering with something like libera is hard, though, because they have strict requirements and a lot of traffic. Then again, thereās no real benefit in peering, actually. IRC is pretty ādecentralizedā anyway and people are usually used to connecting to several networks, so joining another one isnāt a big deal, imho. š
guys i may be stupid. i confused IRC bouncer with IRC server

Mathieu Pasquet: Poezio 0.15 / 0.15.1
About three years since the last version, poezio 0.15 (and 0.15.1 to address
a small packaging mishap, version numbers are cheap) was released yesterday!

this end, poezio originally only supported multi-user chats.
