We don’t have meaningful social connections anymore like our parents or their parents geeration had. We are so scattered, that I am unsure how many of my friends are actually friends and how many are just professional contacts. Everytime I switch job, almost 70% of my friends suddenly fall out of contact. Heck, I don’t even know the people who live in next apartments both left, right, up and down on the same building. Socializing with my friends mean, setting up an appointment weeks ahead to see if we can align on a free-slot and this often involves all of us commuting to somewhere and disbanding by 22:00 hours because family, work next morning, chores to do, doctor appointment and other human things. When the last superforecaster has given up, when the last bet has been resolved, you will discover that you can’t eat living by the sword
The young man, who does not know the future, sees life as a kind of epic adventure, an Odyssey through strange seas and unknown islands, where he will test and prove his powers, and thereby discover his immortality. The man of middle years, who has lived the future that he once dreamed, sees life as a tragedy; for he has learned that his power, however great, will not prevail against those forces of accident and nature to which he gives the names of gods, and has learned that he is mortal. But the man of age, if he plays his assigned role properly, must see life as a comedy. For his triumphs and his failures merge, and one is no more the occasion for pride or shame than the other; and he is neither the hero who proves himself against those forces, nor the protagonist who is destroyed by them. – John Williams in Augustus I thought I’d have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35 (2020) | Hacker News

🤔 👋 Reconsidering moving Yarn.social’s development back to Github: Speaking of which (I do not forget); @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com and I were discussing over a video call two nights ago, as well as @lyse@lyse.isobeef.org who joined a bit later, about the the whole moved of all of my projects and their source code off of Github. Whilst some folks do understand and appreciate my utter disgust over what Microsoft and Copilot did by blatantly scraping open source software’s codebases without even so much as any attempt at attribution or respecting the licenes of many (if not all?) open source projects.
That being said however, @fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com makes a very good and valid argument for putting Yarn.social’s codebases, repositories and issues back on Github for reasons that make me “torn” over my own sense of morality and ethics.
But I can live with this as long as I continue to run and operate my new (yet to be off the ground) company “Self Hosted Pty Ltd” and where it operates it’s own code hosting, servicesa, tools, etc.

@niplav@niplav.github.io I wouldn’t disagree with your characterization of people who’re interested in radical life extension, but their messaging, generally, seems to not mention “adding life to your years” at all. “Live to be 150” doesn’t sound all that great if you’re going to have 15 years of being in your 80s, so to speak.
@(frogorbits.com) “@niplav Seems like most of the (radical) life extension people are interested in adding years to their lives, but agnostic about adding life to their years. “Be old longer” doesn’t appeal to a lot of people.” -> I disagree, the people who i know that are interested in life extension look to me more engaged in life than the ones who are not (though that hinges on definitions of ”adding life to their years”). i agree that “adding life to your years” is underappreciated, though.
@niplav@niplav.github.io Seems like most of the (radical) life extension people are interested in adding years to their lives, but agnostic about adding life to their years. “Be old longer” doesn’t appeal to a lot of people.
@adi@twtxt.net “I usually seen the opposite. Women are more interested in longevity and happy that studies show that they live more than men.” -> I probably could have been clearer: It seems to me that women are on average much less interested in life-extension (methods beyond usual health advice such as the old “exercise, eat vegetables”) than men. This might just be founder/sampling bias (life extension comes out of the relatively male dominated libertarian/techno-optimist cluster). Actually, maybe there’s just a variance thing here: median man cares less about his longevity than the median woman, but the variance for men is higher.
