Confession:
Iāve never found microblogging like twtxt or the Fediverse or any other āmodernā social media to be truly fulfilling/satisfying.
The reason is that it is focused so much on people. You follow this or that person, everybody spends time making a nice profile page, the posts are all very āego-centricā. Seriously, it feels like everybody is on an ego-trip all the time (this is much worse on the Fediverse, not so much here on twtxt).
I miss the days of topic-based forums/groups. A Linux forum here, a forum about programming there, another one about a certain game. Stuff like that. That was really great ā and it didnāt even suffer from the need to federate.
Sadly, most of these forums are dead now. Especially the nerds spend a lot of time on the Fediverse now and have abandoned forums almost completely.
On Mastodon, you can follow hashtags, which somewhat emulates a topic-based experience. But itās not that great and the protocol isnāt meant to be used that way (just read the snac2 docs on this issue). And the concept of ālikesā has eliminated lots of the actual user interaction. ā¹ļø

@movq@www.uninformativ.de When I reply to a message, I typically already mention the feed. Just like in this very message. I believe this mechanism should work for most replies. But there are of course the odd responses where I do not mention the original feed, but rather some other feed(s) instead to which I actually want to reply. Maybe āforkingā, as prologic calls it, would be the better option there.
@prologic@twtxt.net hahahahaha! No, no, no. Every word has its use. But for things like these I like certain reactions. that said, and reading to @sorenpeter@darch.dk and @andros@twtxt.andros.dev I have new thoughts. I assume that this wonāt change anyoneās opinions or priorities, so it makes no harm sharing them.
Itās always tempting to use something that already exists (like X, Masto, Bsky, etc.) rather that building anything through effort and disagreement until reaching to something useful and valuable together. A āsocial serviceā is only useful if people is using it.
Iāll add that I havenāt lost interest on the āhackyā part of twtxt about developing tools, protocols, and extensions as a community. Itās the appealing part! Itās a nice hobby to have, shared with random people across the world.
But this is not the right way for me, and makes me feel that Iām unwelcome to propose something different (after watching replies to my previous twt). Feels like āIf you donāt agree, you are free to leave, weāll miss you.ā Naah, not cool. How LWN is faring in 2025
Just over six years ago, The Economist described the US economy as ā the envy of the\āØworldā. That headline would be unlikely to appear now. The economic

@movq@www.uninformativ.de Agreed, finding the right motivation can be tricky. You sometimes have to torture yourself in order to later then realize, yeah, that was actually totally worth it. Itās often hard.
I think if you find a project or goal in general that these kids want to achieve, that is the best and maybe only choice with a good chance of positive outcome. I donāt know, like building a price scraper, a weather station or whatever. Yeah, these are already too advanced if they never programmed, but you get the idea. If they have something they want to build for themselves for their private life, that can be a great motivator Iāve experienced. Or you could assign āem the task to build their own twtxt client if they donāt have any own suitable ideas. :-)
Showing them that you do a lot of your daily work in the shell can maybe also help to get them interested in text-based boring stuff. Or at least break the ice. Lead by example. The more I think about it, the more I believe this to be very important. Thatās how I still learn and improve from my favorite workmate today in general. Which Iām very thankful of.
Weāre all old farts. When we started, there werenāt a lot of options. But today? Iād be completely overwhelmed, I think.
Hence, Iād recommend to start programming with a console program. As for the language, not sure. But Python is probably a good choice

Just some text output is utterly boring these days. ā¹ļø And thatās my problem: I have no idea how I could possibly spark some interest in things like pointers or something ālow-levelā like that. On second thought, maybe to actually park there on the street right at the property line.
I actually never walked on that road before and discovered that this was a dead end. Thereās usually at the very least a foot path on which to continue when passing a farm. Not this time, though. @movq@www.uninformativ.de I started with Delphi in school, the book (that we never ever used even once and I also never looked at) taught Pascal. The UI part felt easy at first but prevented me from understanding fundamental stuff like procedures or functions or even begin and end blocks for ifs or loops. For example I always thought that I needed to have a button somewhere, even if hidden. That gave me a handler procedure where I could put code and somehow call it. Two or three years later, a new mate from the parallel class finally told me that this wasnāt necessary and how to do thing better.
You know all too well that back in the day there was not a whole lot of information out there. And the bits that did exist were well hidden. At least from me. Eventually discovering planet-quellcodes.de (I donāt remember if that was the original forum or if that got split off from some other board) via my best schoolmate was like finding the Amber Room. Yeah, reading the ITG book would have been a very good idea for sure. :-)
In hindsight, a console program without the UI overhead might have been better. At least for the very start. Much less things to worry about or get lost.
Hence, Iād recommend to start programming with a console program. As for the language, not sure. But Python is probably a good choice, it doesnāt require a lot of surrounding boilerplate like, say Java or Go. It also does exceptionally well in the principle of least surprise.
I went on a small hike, just 12-13km this time. The weather was great, blue sky, sunny 18°C, but with the wind it felt colder. Leaves and other green stuff is exploding like crazy. It looks super beautiful right now.

Iāll see if I can fix this and write a test case for whatās going on here. I think this is made difficult now because folks like @eapl.me@eapl.me decide that itās okay to have a . (period) in their # nick 𤣠tbh I think nick(s) should have rules of what they can and cannot be comprised of. i.e: no punctuation š¤¦āāļø
@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org oh, and thanks for the bigger photo! I like how it lovely fill the twtxt in Yarnd. Woot!
Todayās stroll was really nice. Just around 11km in total Iād reckon. We had a barbie at a mateās garden where everybody went on a hunt for an easter basket. Oh boy, what a preparation that must have been! Baking the bunnies, dying the eggs, mixing the bear leek butter and so on. Thatās dedication, let me tell you. :-)
It was the first time this year that we had half proper April weather and a thunderstorm in general. It started off with clear sky and lovely sunshine. Right after arvo lunch it started to rain, so we went into the hut. Then, the sun returned.
On the way back with the growling thunder in the distance coming closer and closer we escaped the rain just perfectly. A minute or two after we reached the car, wet stuff started coming down the sky. Not even half a minute after opening the front door, it poured like crazy. Lucky twice today. Thereās beautiful sunshine again by now. It smells absolutely great after the rain. I love it!

dm-only.txt feeds. š
After reading you, @eapl.me@eapl.me, Iāll tell you my point of view.
In my opinion, a feed does not have to be equivalent to a timeline. A timeline is a representation of the feed adapted to a user. You may not be interested in seeing other peopleās threads or DMs. But perhaps they are interested in seeing mentions or DMs directed at them. It is important not to fall into the trap. With that clarificationā¦
I insist, this is my point of view, it is not an absolute truth: I donāt think extensions should be respectful of customers who are no longer maintained.
We cannot have a system that is simple, backwards compatible and extensible all at the same time. We have to give up some of the 3 points. I would not like to give up simplicity because it will then make it harder to maintain the customers who do stay. Therefore, I think it is better to give up backwards compatibility and play with new formulas in the extensions. I donāt think itās a good idea to make a hash keep so much load: a hashtag, a thread and also a DM.
@prologic@twtxt.net @movq@www.uninformativ.de @bmallred@staystrong.run @ionores@twtxt.net Thank you! Yeah, the yellow meadows look truly awesome.
Watching āHappy People: A Year in the Taigaā in German the evening before, this thing totally looked like a trap to us. So, we decided to sit on another, more rustic bench nearby. :-) Oh neat, it turns out, there is a much longer four part series of the documentary in English on YouTube. Highly recommended! This is part one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbhPIK-oBvA
Judging by the surroundings, I think this is actually a forest altar or something of that nature. But it looks like they started with the chappelās reinforcement steel and then they ran out of money before completing it or even placing the concrete forms. :-P
Yeah, 78 might be photo of the month. Itās one of my favorites.

irc.mills.io running behind Caddy Layer 4. However I don't terminate TLS at the edge in this case.
@prologic@twtxt.net OH SHIT using this for a protocol like gopher is smart! might have to try that for gemini so i donāt have to keep a port open for that
@movq@www.uninformativ.de noted! i did try something like this but it wouldnāt connect on anything without the SSL stuff, which is normally handled by caddy for me but i canāt use certbot with caddy on so iām stuck there LOL

@prologic@twtxt.net Hmm, speaking of locally running āAIā stuff: Someone on Mastodon has this in their profile description:
My profile pic is AI modified to prevent deepfakes. I used local Stable Diffusion on my solar powered 7900XTX to average a few selfies.
That sounds like a fun thing to do. Do I have a chance of doing that on my old box from 2013 without a dedicated GPU? š
