** Video games goods **
Here are 3 mostly unedited paragraphs from a blog post that fizzled out and I decided not to finish
but then I posted it on mastodon and it seemed to resonate with folks, so, here it is as an RSS exclusive plus some other thoughts, too!

I have a weird relationship with video games. I love video games, but I hardly ever really play them. As a kid I wasn’t allowed to play them at home, and didn’t have much facility to play them. I’d get sneaky bits of game time with my cousin in the back of the car o

/usr/bin and /usr/sbin will continue to be independent paths,

I like that property (an off-ramp to location-based addressing), so I think I could live with that approach. ✅

(I’m not sure why we’re using text fragments, though. Wouldn’t that link to the first occurence of 2025-10-01T10:28:00Z? That’s not necessarily correct. And, to be proper URLs that Firefox and Chromium understand, it would also need to be written as 2025%2D10%2D01T10:28:00Z. The dash carries meaning, sadly. I think all this just creates needless complication. How about we just go with https://example.com/tw.txt#2025-10-01T10:28:00Z?)

@alexonit@twtxt.alessandrocutolo.it prologic has me sold on the idea of hashv2 being served alongside a text fragment, eg. (#abcdefghijkl https://example.com/tw.txt#:~:text=2025-10-01T10:28:00Z), because it can be simply hacked in to clients currently on hashv1 and provides an off-ramp to location-based addressing (though i still think the format should be changed to smth like #<abc... http://example.com/...> so it’s cleaner once we finally drop hashes)

In-reply-to » is there consensus on what characters should(n't) be allowed in nicks? i remember reading somewhere whitespace should not be allowed, but i don't see it in the spec on twtxt.dev — in fact, are there any other resources on twtxt extensions outside of twtxt.dev?

@zvava@twtxt.net @movq@www.uninformativ.de I’m not entirely sure about the spaces, but maybe they were omitted to simplify parsing of mentions in the form of @<nick url>. If the next token after the @<nick does not look like a URL, it’s not a mention but regular text. This is just wild guessing, though.

Looking at the regex and tests in the original twtxt reference implementation seems to confirm that theory in the sense as it relies on whitespace as the delimiter:

https://lyse.isobeef.org/tmp/screenshot-2025-09-17-21-30-25.png

Another thing about nicks is that the original twtxt reference implementation converts nicks to all lowercase:

https://lyse.isobeef.org/tmp/screenshot-2025-09-17-21-20-39.png

You probably know this already, the original twtxt file format specification can be found here: https://twtxt.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user/twtxtfile.html

As for extensions, I don’t know of anything outside of twtxt.dev that has actually been (partially) implemented. However, there is also the issue tracker of the official reference implementation. You might wanna dig through that. For example, there is an alternative suggestions of multiline messages: https://github.com/buckket/twtxt/issues/157

I tried to sit at my standing desk today for the first time in an eternity. My ability to focus on any task immediately went from pretty fucking solid to“oooh, what if stare into the middle distance?” so I guess I’ll be continuing to exclusively stand at my desk for the next 10 years. ⌘ Read more

@mozilla@mozilla must have some telemetry or metrics or something to know how many #32bit firefox users are out there. I bet that, as a percentage, they aren’t more than a blip. Still, there has to be several thousand machines out there, running on 32bit hardware, connected to the internet, using #Firefox as its web browser.

And now Mozilla decided to hand those users over to #chromium, by stopping 32-bit support and telling them the alternative is to install a 64bit OS instead.

** A week notes to round out the summer **
I haven’t posted anything remotely resembling week notes since the middle of June! Since then many things have happened including, but not limited to: a trip to Minnesota to visit Isaac, a couple trips to New Hampshire for work, a family trip to Mount Desert Island to revisit our old stomping grounds, a whole heap of bicycle riding, I finished a couple great books, played some games, made some games, and wrote what is probably an unhealthy a

In-reply-to » @bender Oh, there’s an easy explanation. But maybe some mysteries are best left unexplained. 😃 If you want to solve this riddle: The solution is in the phlog! Somewhere! 😅

Hmm: gopher://uninformativ.de/0/phlog/2025/2025-08/2025-08-18--permacomputing.txt

That’s fairly recent, but fully justified. I give up! :-D

https://eco.sapo.pt/2025/09/02/equipa-de-peritos-esta-a-analisar-possiveis-impactos-legais-do-amalia-incluindo-nos-direitos-de-autor/

There’s always something more urgent: I’ve been known for a long time that sooner or later I’d feel prompted to switch from #github to somewhere else (since 2018 at least!), but I’ve been postponing and only very slowly flirting with the idea
That didn’t work too bad for me: if I had rushed into it I would have probably migrated to #gitlab, before knowing about the more objectionable sides to it. In the end, 2025 was the year I finally acted upon the urge to move. I did not do a very thorough analysis of the alternative hosts - what I have been reading about them along the years felt enough, and I easily decided to choose #codeberg. Being hasty like that, alas, was a mistake: I just now found - during this slow and time-consuming process of deciding what and how to migrate - that there is a low repository limit on codeberg: “The owner has already reached the limit of 100 repositories.” I’m not complaining, mind you, and those “lucky 100” that are already there will stay - at least as a sort of backup. But this means that codeberg is not for me - and so this time I turn to you, the #mastodon community.

What github alternative, not self-hosted, should I move my >100 projects into?
