Heute war ich mit dem Ziehkind in der Stadt unterwegs.
Mitten beim Eisschlecken fährt die Polizei in einem zivilen Wagen quer durch die Fußgängerzone. An der Bank am Markt dann weitere Uniformierte und kein Einlass für Kunden.
Da mussten wir uns in der Stadtbibliothek erst einmal Material zu dem Thema besorgen.

Laptops are in good condition, battery can last several hours still, biggest defect is the Touch Bar (which includes the F1-F12 and media keys) is turning hazy and is not cosmetically pleasant. Touch Bar and thus keys all still work. Each laptop has a valid Windows 10 keys but I can also install Ubuntu or Debian upon request.

Source I look at are Reuters, NPR, The Guardian, Die Zeit, NY Times, CNN, Tagesschau, Spiegel Online, RP Online (for local news), … I would never just trust what I see in my social media feeds.

Your favourite social media platform should not be where you get your facts from. You get jokes and share with your friends, but facts they ain’t. Get your world news from actual news sources instead.

I haven’t been able to find out exactly how far the legislation goes, but some have said it’s broad enough to include any site that even has a comment section 🤔 but that could be FUD.

Metadata on individual twts are too much for me. I do like the simplicity of the current spec. But I understand where you’re coming from.

Numbering twts in a feed is basically the attempt of generating message IDs. It’s an interesting idea, but I reckon it is not even needed. I’d simply use location based addressing (feed URL + ‘#’ + timestamp) instead of content addressing. If one really wanted to, one could hash the feed URL and timestamp, but the raw form would actually improve disoverability and would not even require a richer client. But the majority of twtxt users in the last poll wanted to stick with content addressing.

yarnd actually sends If-Modified-Since request headers. Not only can I observe heaps of 304 responses for yarnds in my access log, but in Cache.FetchFeeds(…) we can actually see If-Modified-Since being deployed when the feed has been retrieved with a Last-Modified response header before: https://git.mills.io/yarnsocial/yarn/src/commit/98eee5124ae425deb825fb5f8788a0773ec5bdd0/internal/cache.go#L1278

Turns out etags with If-None-Match are only supported when yarnd serves avatars (https://git.mills.io/yarnsocial/yarn/src/commit/98eee5124ae425deb825fb5f8788a0773ec5bdd0/internal/handlers.go#L158) and media uploads (https://git.mills.io/yarnsocial/yarn/src/commit/98eee5124ae425deb825fb5f8788a0773ec5bdd0/internal/media_handlers.go#L71). However, it ignores possible etags when fetching feeds.

I don’t understand how the discovery URLs should work to replace the User-Agent header in HTTP(S) requests. Do you mind to elaborate?

Different protocols are basically just a client thing.

I reckon it’s best to just avoid mixing several languages in one feed in the first place. Personally, I find it okay to occasionally write messages in other languages, but if that happens on a more regularly basis, I’d definitely create a different feed for other languages.

Isn’t the emoji thing “just” a client feature? So, feed do not even have to state any emojis. As a user I’d configure my client to use a certain symbol for feed ABC. Currently, I can do a similar thing in tt where I assign colors to feeds. On the other hand, what if a user wants to control what symbol should be displayed, similar to the feed’s nick? Hmm. But still, my terminal font doesn’t even render most of emojis. So, Unicode boxes everywhere. This makes me think it should actually be a only client feature.

Unfortunately the US media has been making it a nail biter on purpose when in reality it is not. Get out and vote in numbers that cannot be denied. And then get everyone else around you to vote also.

Maybe one day enough states will make it into the NaPo InterCo to finally put the EC to rest.

Anyway, I don’t think my eccentric decision to number my twts in the style of other social media platforms is the only context where someone might write ¼ not meaning a quarter. E.g. January 4, to Americans.

Also tweaked the settings of my Bitaxe bitcoin miner, it was running a bit unstable, tweaked some settings and now it finally runs like it should.

Media upload works, light\dark theme enabled. Tested it on debian\windows - works out of the box, statusbar moved to bottom for cleaner UI. Next is working more on ui when it refreshes the timelines. .

A equivalent yarnc debug <url> only sees the 2nd hash

Got all 3 timelines in, so you can switch between them.
Need to add some kind of refresh feature as well, then I’ll get it cleaned up and put the source out, and continue from there - also the UI is not final, now I’m just focusing on features. The UI will be cleaned up as well.

Pretty cool. Got the timeline working, statuses separated, avatars loading, linked images in statuses works, can also post statuses from it.

This will replace the current gtk4 client I wrote, I like this much better.
Will also make it into a appimage, and look into flatpak as well.

Today I’m looking into flutter again, I’ve been wanting to test that out for a while.
I started adding functionality from the ‘yarn desktop client’ ( https://github.com/stig-atle/YarnDesktopClient ) I’ve been working on - and now I see if I can get the same functionality up and running with flutter.
Currently I’m able to log in and fetch the logged in user’s username at least (the text :username: is fetched after logging in), so it’s a good start.
That means I have the things I need to fetch the timeline and present that next.

Yesterday we had some time to ourselves, kids was sleeping at grandmas place. So me and Marlyn went for a 250 km ride on twisty forest roads :) now we are home again, nachos and movie 🍿. Love you Marlyn!

Bought a motorcycle this summer, I did not want two cars, and Marlyn would like to have the car more when I’m at work. So I bought a new cheap motorcycle, KTM Adventure 390.
It’s been 10 years since I last had a motorcycle (back then I had a KTM 990cc).
Here I am with my daughter on the new bike :)
My kids love to go for rides, so does Marlyn as well, so it’s a lot of fun for all of us.

We visited Heddal stave church from 13th century, was really nice. Never been inside it until yesterday. Such a great building. Amazing to sit there and think about all the people who had been there since it was built.
