In-reply-to » Over the past few weeks I've been experimenting with and doing some deep learning and researching into neutral networks and evolutionary adaptation of them. The thing is I haven't gotten very far. I've been able to build two different approaches so far with limited results. The frustrating part is that these things are so "random" it isn't even funny. Like I can't even get a basic ANN + GA to evolve a network that solves the XOR pattern every time with high levels of accuracy. 😞

This is one of my attempts:

$ go build ./cmd/xor/... && ./xor
Generation 95 | Fitness: 0.999964 | Nodes: 9 | Conns: 19
Target reached!

Best network performance:
  [0 0] → got=0 exp=0 (raw=0.000) ✅
  [0 1] → got=1 exp=1 (raw=0.990) ✅
  [1 0] → got=1 exp=1 (raw=0.716) ✅
  [1 1] → got=0 exp=0 (raw=0.045) ✅
Overall accuracy: 100.0%

Nobody want to be a shitty programmer. The question is: Do you do anything not to not be one?
Reading blogs or social media and watching YouTube videos is fun. After them, your code may be a little better, of course. But you need a lot. You need to study! Read good books and study the code of other programmers, for example. Maybe work with a new language, architectures and paradigms. You need break the routine.

If you know Object-oriented programming, you learn functional programming.
If you know Model-View-Controller, you learn Model-View-ViewModel.
If you don’t know anything about architectures, you learn Clean Architecture, Hexagonal Architecture, etc.
If you know Python, you learn Ruby or Go.
If you know Clojure or Lisp
you don’t need to learn anything else. You are already a good programmer. Just kidding. You can learn Elixir or Scala.

Be a good programmer my friend.

In-reply-to » @kat I've almost fixed this btw đŸ€— Just testing it thoroughly and polihsing the code. In case you're curious, I do this style of development called "Observability Driven Development" (ODD) whereby I make observations of the system via metrics and internal observations and adjust the system's overall behavior to the desired outcome 😅

I’m not even being facetious here either. I’d llove to see you “unit tests” this:

Confession:

I’ve never found microblogging like twtxt or the Fediverse or any other “modern” social media to be truly fulfilling/satisfying.

The reason is that it is focused so much on people. You follow this or that person, everybody spends time making a nice profile page, the posts are all very “ego-centric”. Seriously, it feels like everybody is on an ego-trip all the time (this is much worse on the Fediverse, not so much here on twtxt).

I miss the days of topic-based forums/groups. A Linux forum here, a forum about programming there, another one about a certain game. Stuff like that. That was really great – and it didn’t even suffer from the need to federate.

Sadly, most of these forums are dead now. Especially the nerds spend a lot of time on the Fediverse now and have abandoned forums almost completely.

On Mastodon, you can follow hashtags, which somewhat emulates a topic-based experience. But it’s not that great and the protocol isn’t meant to be used that way (just read the snac2 docs on this issue). And the concept of “likes” has eliminated lots of the actual user interaction. â˜č

P.S: the couple first Seasons and Her (The movie) are the main reasons I find it a bit difficult to go back to mainstream social media or even care about smartphones 😆

In-reply-to » 💡 I had this crazy idea (or is it?) last night while thinking about Twtxt and Yarn.social 😅 There are two things I think that could be really useful additions to the yarnd UI/UX experience (for those that use it) and as "client" features (not spec changes). The two ideas are quite simple:

This expands the usefulness of Twtxt / Yarn.social to:

  • Sharing small posts
  • Sharing links
  • Sharing media
  • Having long conversations
  • Voting on topics, opinions or decisions
  • RSVPing to virtual or physical events

In-reply-to » I asked ChatGPT what it knows about Twtxt 😂 And surprisingly it's rather accurate:

Timeline of Evolution of Twtxt/Yarn.social:

  • 2016 – Twtxt created by John Downey: plain text + HTTP = minimalist microblogging
  • 2017–2019 – Community builds CLI tools, but adoption remains niche
  • 2020 – Yarn.social launched by @prologic@twtxt.net with federation, threading, UI
  • 2021–2023 – Pods sync, user mentions, blocking, search, and media support added
  • 2024+ – Yarn.social becomes the reference Twtxt platform, with active federated pods

Bit of an update, there is now a general licence for all my stuff:

“Unless projects are accompanied by a different license, Creative Commons apply (“BY-NC-ND” for all art featuring the Canine mascot and “BY-NC” for everything else).”

It’s even included on my website, where most of the demand for a clear licence originated from:

In practice this changes nothing, as I was never enforcing anything more than this anyway and given permission for other use too. Now it’s just official that this is the baseline, of what can be done, without having to ask for permission first.

 Fucking hell. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ56ibIel1U

@prologic@twtxt.net I formed my opinion about this before reading/watching any additional media coverage. And yes, this is extremely bad. These two have no place on the “world stage”. They are deciding on our future. (And I am well aware that my country is heading into a similar direction – unless we stop it.)

now I’m discovering «A Philosophy of Software Design»  but nobody talks about the importance of the project architecture. Do we depend on the framework to do the work for us?
You know I’m a big fan of Clean Architecture, but I feel alone when I share my thoughts on social media or at work.
You have to think outside the framework.

In-reply-to » Na, you're spot on, @movq! The result is an expected, terrible disaster. It just seems the absolute catastrophy is delayed for another four years.

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org

The big established parties are all bad traitors. I blame them and their actions to help raise AfD. They just [don’t?] give a fuck about the ordinary people, they’re only concerned about their private gain and power.

To a large degree, yes. But I think the media is also equally at fault. There was absolutely no reason to invite AfD people to every event and let them talk. This has been going on for over 10 years. When we give them a stage to spread their hate, are we really surprised that hate spreads
 ?

I don’t know the answers to this desaster. I’m beginning to think that people literally just want an outlet for their frustration, nothing more. It’s not about what particular parties actually plan to do. At least I think this applies to people in their 30ies and 40ies.

In-reply-to » @andros I have really tried to get behind it. For an implementation for my TwtxtReader (PHP) I simply lack the knowledge of the standard-openssl parameters. All my solution approaches require “nonce” or “initialization vector” on one or the other side. In addition, the “magic numbers” (“Salted__”) were not consistent in my tests.

@arne@uplegger.eu

If I keep the “nonce”, I can decrypt a message with the shared key, like in the direct message specs.
But that is not how it should work. 😒
