Just reading in-depth and trying to understand the security model of Delta.Chat a bit more… There’s a few things that really concern me about how Delta.Chat which relies on Autocrypt work:
- There is no Perfect Forward Secrecy
- No verification of keys
- Is therefore susceptible to Man-in-the-Middle attacks

** Forth, a tool for cultivating community **
I watch most of the recordings of the Forth2020’s Zoom chats. A topic that comes up from time to time is how to get more folks interested in Forth — especially younger folks. In my weird little corner of the internet I can say that there are certainly young folks interested in Forth!
I wonder if the issue at play is less one of interest, and more one of cross c … ⌘ Read more

Someone in #twtxt on libera.chat asked a question and pinged everyone, and then left. The question was “is twtxt compatible with mastodon?” The answer is no. It isn’t.
From a chat on Matrix, where it seems it was one of my more coherent moments: 🤪
… Why can’t they just be individuals? Individuals with their own individual beliefs and their own individual reasons for having those beliefs…
And so just default to a stance of respect and courtesy. The fact is, most of your interactions with others will be very limited; approaching those encounters from a place of respect for the complexities of the human mind and an individual’s experiences and traumas costs you very little, typically.
To be human is to generalise, but that doesn’t mean you can’t push back against those tendencies.
…
Well, in the context of chat, it would be something like you’ve just done: don’t put words in my mouth, based on my avatar, nick, grammar, etc., and instead ask me to elaborate on points of potential confusion.
And don’t bring agendas to everything. Default to assuming that this is likely an interaction of hours, and people don’t change based on that, typically.
You’ll probably get more from interactions that you’re open to, but, be honest with yourself: if you aren’t up to that, because it isn’t easy, then just default to respect and courtesy, which isn’t difficult, and costs you little. And then excuse yourself, if they’re proper jerks. ;-)
Any of y’all seen https://briarproject.org? It’s another fledgling decentralized chat like session but minus the weird blockchain.. it has group chat, forums, and blogs. Also can work via Bluetooth or tor.

Matrix vs. XMPP
XMPP and Matrix are two decentralized and federated free sofware projects for chat, including true end-to-end encrypted chat.
Users can either install the software on their own server if they want, but they can also easily register on any public server—both allow any XMPP or Matrix user to talk to users on their server or on any other one. In essence, it works like email: you might have an em … ⌘ Read more
i’m not really advocating that anybody should be on more networks, but FWIW libera.chat has been very nice, the staff has been doing a great job, and it’s the nearest “spiritual successor” to what we all liked about Freenode.
You’ve basically already left, whether you know it or not. Yesterday they nuked their services database. I’d been there ~20 years, but it’s dead. Libera.chat has been lovely.

@prologic@twtxt.net sometimes I think it would be nice to have a XMPP instance. then I remember it’s all XML and I think “nah.”
I am constantly in awe that IRC remains the only realtime chat that isn’t unnecessarily complex. name another that can run chatops bot with just nc and sh?
@prologic@twtxt.net well nice chat. it’s off to bed for me.

@adiabetic@www.frogorbits.com I think my pulse would be high a lot of times if using iOS. I hear of so many problems from #xmpp devs fighting iOS and push. Not having a reliable chat app due to apples design constraints would really piss me off.
@nonlinear@nonlinear.radiofreqs.space I always wonder why people still use #IRC nowadays. A chat system which can not be used mobile is weird today.
@nonlinear@nonlinear.radiofreqs.space there is an #xmpp muc: xmpp:twtxt@chat.mdosch.de?join but unfortunately not much used.
