⌘ Read more

Status 2024-01-29
Friday is my day off from work, as usual. So when I’m typing this I’m
in front of the hackstation (not a battlestation, obviously) with my
third cup of coffee, writing an update again.
I’ve been doing these status updates on my Gemini log, but I’m
increasingly aware of the dropping amounts of traffic, so I’m thinking
about doing them on the blog instead, but see below for some thoughts
on Gemini.

Check out the Nex Protocol. It’s designed to be even simpler than Gemini and Gopher. What do you think? Could be great to host a twtxt feed on.
Another part of this crisis is that I like the idea of what I was doing with gemini, but the main issue here is that hosting from my house when my internet is terminated every month for 10-15 days is a problem. Not just for my sanity, but also for reliability

Almost MIPS-only session today! Actually, I also briefly ran my PowrBook G4 and the Gemini PDA in attempt to fix my Pebble. But mostly the SGI O2 and the Indigo, too!
@eaplmx@twtxt.net This exact thing happened to me last night. I happened to be watching some random Youtube video, then this Ad came on, normally they are short 3-5s ads and I just tolerate them (sometimes) – But this particular ad was 20+ mins long! Somehow I kept listening to it too, despite my daughter telling me I could hit that “Skip Ad” button.
What was it you ask?! 😅 It was one of those testimonial-style, hyped up marketing videos of some product called “Gemini 2” (a currency trading app, allegedly), I kept watching all the way through, it was fantastic! 🤣
Then I went and read up on it! …
Short answer: TOTAL FUCKING SCAM 🤣
@prologic@twtxt.net It’s called “cgod” and it isn’t written in C or Go? I want my money back…
I also like Gopher more than Gemini. The problem Gemini is trying to solve is better solved by just writing static HTML 4.01 pages.

This week we presented the Tillitis Key 1 at the Open Source Firmware\

Gemini is a lightweight Internet protocol. It’s heavier than Gopher

the web is the Apollo program.

@benk@kwiecien.us I haven’t actually looked at the original twtxt client, which means the following is ill-conceived speculation, but I believe that it only fetched feeds when you “refreshed”, with a minimum time between feed fetches. Sure, you’ll fetch feed unnecessarily now and then, but not nearly as often as polling every 5 minutes ;)

@benk@kwiecien.us I am using jenny (we chatted a bit on IRC earlier today). I have been using it for over five months now, I think. It is truly a joy to use, specially because you can use the power of Mutt/NeoMutt to read your twts.
Though twtxt registries never really took off gemini://warmedal.se/~antenna/twtxt.txt presents the last 7 days of twts known by Antenna in the registry format. It’s intended to be a help in discovering twt feeds in geminispace (there aren’t very many yet).
@benk@kwiecien.us I meant literally a few minutes 😄 @prologic@twtxt.net told me he’d just implemented it. Btw, which twtxt client are you using now, Ben?
@benk@kwiecien.us https://yarn.social/ has support for fetching feeds over gemini since a few minutes back! Not serving them there that I know of, but that’s just a matter of pointing your gemini server to the twtxt.txt file.
@benk@kwiecien.us Hello, benk! 😃
Oopsies, turns out I’ve never included my twtxt file on Gemini

@fastidious@arrakis.netbros.com the things Gemini has going for it are mutual TLS and lack of JavaScript. Which makes for a secure albeit boring experience (much like gopher). The fake markdown is a bit of a drag.
A render mode for Gemini probably wouldnt be too hard. There are markdown to Gemini libs out there.
With Web3 the whole trust a 3rd party browser ext + high fees + env impact for compute and storage are serious no gos for me.. I have heard one too many horror stories about clicking the wrong link and some script draining your metamask wallet.

@benk@kwiecien.us Ubuntu is being similarly mean to me. “Can’t upgrade X because Y depends on older version. Can’t update Y because there’s a dependency problem”. I’m pretty sure the dependency problem would be solved with an upgrade, but I can’t perform one…
@compudanzas@compudanzas.net I have no idea what that means, but it sounds exciting!
There’s a lot of chatter about what to do with the work on the gemini spec. Hopefully we’ll have a solution of some kind in place soon.
@fab@foobucket.xyz No need to apologize 🙂️ Speaking of being active I’ve gotten absolutely nothing done on my twtxt project this week. I think I need to rethink a bit to find a fun next step.
@fab@foobucket.xyz Wassup? 😄️
@fab@foobucket.xyz I’ve noticed that podman isn’t (or at least wasn’t a year or so ago when I checked) available on Raspbian/Raspberry Pi OS. I didn’t know Alpine is available for the RPi. Is it good?
@fab@foobucket.xyz Do it! 😄️ It’s my favourite one, too. The svg file contains a bunch of variants in various state of completion and weirdly composed. It took a few attempts before I felt that I got it just right.
@benk@kwiecien.us I detail the config here, actually: gemini://warmedal.se/~bjorn/posts/mount-your-tilde.gmi
@fab@foobucket.xyz Deciding what to write about is always an issue for me too… Sometimes I feel like all I do is announce updates to my different software stuff.
@benk@kwiecien.us I’ve mounted my server with autofs+sshfs to ~/Remotes/warmedal.se, which means my gemlog is actually in my home folder 😄️
@benk@kwiecien.us Buffy the Vampire Slayer 😄️ I’m at season 6 now, and when I’m done I guess I’ll start binging Angel.
@benk@kwiecien.us I’ve logged in to Monad now (iOS XMPP client) but I’ve gotta be honest: I don’t know if I’ve created a user in the app or logged in to tilde.team 🤔 Do you happen to know how I join a group? And which groups do you recommend?
