An official FBI document dated January 2021, obtained by the American association “Property of People” through the Freedom of Information Act.
This document summarizes the possibilities for legal access to data from nine instant messaging services: iMessage, Line, Signal, Telegram, Threema, Viber, WeChat, WhatsApp and Wickr. For each software, different judicial methods are explored, such as subpoena, search warrant, active collection of communications metadata (“Pen Register”) or connection data retention law (“18 USC§2703”). Here, in essence, is the information the FBI says it can retrieve:
Apple iMessage: basic subscriber data; in the case of an iPhone user, investigators may be able to get their hands on message content if the user uses iCloud to synchronize iMessage messages or to back up data on their phone.
Line: account data (image, username, e-mail address, phone number, Line ID, creation date, usage data, etc.); if the user has not activated end-to-end encryption, investigators can retrieve the texts of exchanges over a seven-day period, but not other data (audio, video, images, location).
Signal: date and time of account creation and date of last connection.
Telegram: IP address and phone number for investigations into confirmed terrorists, otherwise nothing.
Threema: cryptographic fingerprint of phone number and e-mail address, push service tokens if used, public key, account creation date, last connection date.
Viber: account data and IP address used to create the account; investigators can also access message history (date, time, source, destination).
WeChat: basic data such as name, phone number, e-mail and IP address, but only for non-Chinese users.
WhatsApp: the targeted person’s basic data, address book and contacts who have the targeted person in their address book; it is possible to collect message metadata in real time (“Pen Register”); message content can be retrieved via iCloud backups.
Wickr: Date and time of account creation, types of terminal on which the application is installed, date of last connection, number of messages exchanged, external identifiers associated with the account (e-mail addresses, telephone numbers), avatar image, data linked to adding or deleting.
TL;DR Signal is the messaging system that provides the least information to investigators.
Thoughts on Apple Vision Pro?
Still undecided between TiddlyWiki, DokuWiki, Bear, Benotes, Memos, my blog software, standardnotes, apple notes and more. I like them all quite a bit, but standardnotes, the only one that has reall multiplatform is so fucking complicated to host on your own and then they have this stupid offline subscription thing that allows rich text or the block editor that works like notion. I also found codex docs which is really really nice. Unfortunately they lack proper authentication. 1 / 2
it seems they are following the URN format of a URI where you just prefix things with colons.

@prologic@twtxt.net I am thinking on calling in sick to work. 😂 Every time I order an iPhone, I take the day off on delivery day. On Apple events I normally use my lunch and break times all combined, to watch them.
Apple’s event on Monday is bringing, as always, speculation to the table. One thing most outlets seem to agree is the introduction of an “M1X” chip, thought Apple might call it differently. M1X might also mean, M1(we don’t know what comes after, or next generation). Either way, I would really like to see the return of the 27” iMac, but I will not hold my breath. Massive piles of implementation bugs notwithstanding, See (on Apple TV+) is pretty neat if you’re into worldbuilding like I am.
@sixbitproxywax@sixbitproxywax.com if I didn’t livetxt Apple presentations, one-per-decade would probably be enough for me. However…I might just get lazy and chop them up into one-per-decade things anyway.
@kas@enotty.dk doesn’t seem like a bad idea. I suppose I should do that one day too eventually, but I haven’t livetweeted enough Apple events to bloat my file to where I’d want to bother.
#Apple of 2019 is the #Linux of 2000: https://nibblestew.blogspot.com/2019/10/apple-of-2019-is-linux-of-2000.html?m=1
@mdosch@mdosch.de Apple refuses to ship GPLv3 software. bash has security bugs that Apple doesn’t want to backport. So they’ve switched default shells again, this time to zsh. (bash and the previous default, tcsh, still ship with the OS.)
This won’t get me a “Dear Mr. Cook” mention in an Apple event, but I thought it was pretty cool to be able to use my iPad in the kitchen without touching it. Voice Control is pretty good.
@adiabetic@www.frogorbits.com I think my pulse would be high a lot of times if using iOS. I hear of so many problems from #xmpp devs fighting iOS and push. Not having a reliable chat app due to apples design constraints would really piss me off.
How can you tell when an Apple fan is dead tired? He blanks out when prompted for his Apple ID.
That looks like my local Apple Store. I wonder how similar the normal ones are to each other.
4K TV on Apple computers? Finally.
OK, Sign In With Apple…almost seems neat. Of course, Apple is relaying e-mail for you…
https://www.apple.com/apple-events/livestream/ doesn’t even support dark mode. Sad!
@adiabetic@www.frogorbits.com I am strongly refusing to use Apple products but for different reasons. But I wouldn’t consider anything except a computer or a console appropriate for gaming. Pads and phones might be for casual games but not for gaming.
