Since honesty is kindness, Microsoft is by far the worst company I ever had the displeasure of trying to communicate with. Getting them to fix the most basic of bugs always took years. In some cases it’s been over two and a half decades and it’s still broken.

I never thought it was even possible to make an operating system so broken, I’d have to manually restart my background services and set “network interface metrics” by hand, in advanced TCP/IP settings, while using it.

There are buttons that don’t even do anything when clicked and ones I’ve never seen do anything other than throw an error message.

The AI they rent to pretend to be an AI company, was for years outputting paragraphs, describing the beautiful and artful checkerboard pattern in the background, whenever trying to analyze transparent images. Transparent profile pictures work only on GitHub, the one product where the implementation was done prior to Microsoft acquisition.

Many engineers in their own forums, still manage to make that very AI sound smart, in comparison.

The design is an absolute shitshow, where no two things look like they belong in the same system — the only thing almost consistent, is excessive padding and rounded corners, placed wherever they fit the least.

But hey, 5000 engineers were fired, that will surely improve things!

I had given it a try in a VM, ~4 years ago, and managed to brick it in less than a week xD The sad thing though, was deleting the VM. missing out on an opportunity to boot in single user mode and try fixing my mess.

While with solargraphy you don’t need the 25 pages the paper sold online has. Anyway its really fun because no need for chemicals or a dark room.

Though the code at least for the desktop client is just a single python file. Plus I do know in the future it might be unmaintable.
I am not the type of person to be like “wow do everything in ai this is so great”
The entire reason I tried ai coding a twtxt client was because in an irc channel someone was like “twtxt is so simple even ai can do it” and then I get a five year old (the ai) to do it and because its simple its actually done. I don’t excpect it to be the best ever compared to the human coded twtxt stuff but at least it gets me back on twtxt. I don’t like every other twtxt client that much.

I’m really uncertain about this, to be honest. Short-term, you can vibe-code a ton of stuff and get away with it. I think that quality/correctness only matters for a small fraction of software out there. But long-term? I guess that then depends on whether you’re able to still pay the AI bills. Maintenance/refactoring is going to be veeeeeeeeeeery expensive, and virtually no human will be able to do those tasks. Or, you know, just rip off your customers and don’t sell any long-lasting support contracts in the first place.

I dunno. 🤷‍♀️

AI is an amplifier: If you already didn’t care about good code before AI, then you most certainly won’t start caring with AI, so the result is just a massive dumpster fire.

This funnel is a famous landmark originally built in the 40ies or 50ies on top of a hill range by a local coffee roaster modeled after their logo for advertising purposes. They were called “Schwäbische Kaffeewerke” or something like that. As a coffee guy, you might have heard of them. :-)

When this company went bankrupt several decades later, a chemistry plant nearby expanded to that site and flattened most of the infrastructure, but took over the funnel. They maintain it now. You can see some of their larger office highrises on the right. Luckily, most of their buildings, tanks, chimneys, etc. are on the opposite hill side and in the valley, so they’re out sight from this point of view and don’t further ruin the shot.

A few years ago, they underwent a rebranding and – at least surprisingly to me – changed their logo to also incorporate said funnel now. Giant ads lives forever, I reckon.
