This is (part of) why this whole AI/LLM topic makes me so sad and angry: Many people in tech are such a disappointment. You’re smart and intelligent, but you don’t give a fuck about anything. “It’s just a tool.”

@zotero@zotero I noticed that some combinations of XFCE appearance (light) themes and Zotero made the menu “disappear” (black on black) as the window title was dark. Changing the Zotero to a dark theme or changing the XFCE theme worked (but then, I liked the dark window title on a light theme best…). Should I try to open an issue about this, or is it a XFCE issue? I don’t want to burden the maintainers but it was a bit disturbing not to find the menus…

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org Xfce is nice, but it’s also mostly GTK. I don’t really know the answer yet. For now, I’ll just avoid anything that uses GTK4.

For my own programs, I might have a closer look at Tkinter. I was complaining recently that I couldn’t find a good file manager, so it might be an interesting excercise to write one in Python+Tkinter. 🤔 (Or maybe that’s too much work, I don’t know yet.)

@movq@www.uninformativ.de I was never a fan of GTK, because coming from KDE, it didn’t offer remotely as much of customizability. What are you switching to, Xfce?

I was drafting support for showing “application icons” in my window manager, i.e. the Firefox icon in the titlebar:

Then I realized: Wait a minute, lots of applications don’t set an icon? And lots of other window managers don’t show these icons, either? Openbox, pekwm, Xfce, fvwm, no icons.

Looks like macOS doesn’t show them, either?!

Has this grown out of fashion? Is this purely a Windows / OS/2 thing?

Xfce does one thing very right: It stores its settings in plain-text XML files. This allows me to easily read, track, and maybe even distribute these settings to other machines.

(Unlike GNOME’s dconf, which uses some binary file format. Fun fact: The older and now deprecated gconf also used XML files.)

Don’t install Trinity desktop on Slackware. Kde wayland does not work anymore and regular kde x11 is mixed with parts from Trinity. Going to need to do a reinstall. Plus Trinity is half working anyway. Best to stick with Kde and xfce.
