âIf you only pay attention to how things work, youâll be screwed when they failâ â Cory Doctorow

Most of this insane power consumption happens during the models training, so the additional cost of prompting, is minimal. Facebook invented cool ways to exted the environmental damage far beyond the training stage, by dumping the dirty data center water into nearby water sources, but thatâs more so a Facebook problem, than a fault of AI.
I would still never waste my own money, paying for any AI subscriptions that my employer doesnât already pay for, no matter if we use them, or not.
I am also against aggressive scraping and taking everything as training data, disregarding the authors wishes and license. I allow it on my website, mostly as proof that no matter how much they scrape my stuff, the real me remains both a superior webdev and artist.
I am well aware this makes me come across really egotistical, especially after developers far better than me, embraced vibe coding, arguably way too much. To give an example, all attempts to get Microsoft Copilot, thatâs embedded into SharePoint, to generate an extension/uBlock filter to make SharePoint revert to the old superior UI failed, but I was able to do that in three lines of code ( https://thecanine.smol.pub/ublock-filters ), in half an hour, despite me never seeing the code of that page before. After a few of these comparisons, it is increasingly hard to see most of these tools, as my replacement.
I am not even going to talk about the people trying to imitate my art style with AI, until they can show me a result where all the squares are the same size, in a grid and actually square.
Data protection, @dce@hashnix.club! :-D
This revealed another bug in my client that I still need to fix at some point. Inserting an empty set of messages failed with an SQL logic error. Whoops. I didnât think about that corner case.
Oh god đ€Ł I mean I had this idea to re-invent âGit hostingâ, but failed. Maybe Iâll try it again. I dunno. The thing is I hardly get âIssuesâ really, only when I ask nicely, of folks I know every well đ€Ł So think at much âsmaller scaleâ we need a different solution, and I think @movq@www.uninformativ.de is on to something, but not to the extend implemented, somewhere in the middle I think? đ€
@movq@www.uninformativ.de Yeah, the damn message to urge me into updating for no reason. It still works fine, why update then!? Leave me alone. If downloading fails, thereâs already a hint that updating might fix it. The introduction of this banner in https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/pull/13937 doesnât give any reason for that change either.

The auDA, and some 3rd-party identify service and my Registrar are a joke!
WOW! I just had to share this little story I ran into today.
I tried to register a .AU Domain the other day, only for it to instantly fail.
I emailed support, which took several days to respond, only for them to respond by saying (paraphased):
Weâre sorry, but the identify checks failed. The 3rd-aprty service doesnât tell us why, But, please make sure that the ID you used matches the Full Name, including any Middle name(s).
I used my Passport number. Which of course has my First, Middle and Last Name.
I can only assume at this point that the checks failed on the missing âMiddle nameâ. Why? Because the Registrar I use has a database and user interface for âcontactsâ that only have support for First name and Last name. NO Middle Name.
đ€Šââïž This is basically stupid at this point. Systems cannot be trusted at the most fundamental level, no matter how good they are.
Until we figure out how to build a system that allows an individual to prove to another entity that they are who they say they are without a shred of doubt (i.e: cryptographically), weâre stuffed.
There is literally nothing I can do in this case. The auDA are at fault. The 3rd-party identify service (unknown) are at fault. The registrar are at fault. Hell, even the Passport office are at fault for even bothering to or requiring a Middle name.

Last year, I made a huge mistake. I repeated on here, what multiple sourcea at Google told me, and what is to this day, written on their blog about Android.
I failed to take into consideration, that people who work at Google, often just lie, or present things intentionally vaguely, so they do not have to follow through with their promises.
I would like to apologize to everyone, who took my previous posts here, as assurance software not explicitly approved by Google, will continue working on Android, past this year (or even just a couple months from now) and that everything has been resolved, as things are now in fact even worse, than they were before. @abucci@anthony.buc.ci coined the term âfailsceneâ:
https://buc.ci/abucci/p/1771250567.039684
I wonder about using âfailsceneâ to describe the current slate of AI tools and demos. In contrast with the demoscene, which is about getting very low powered computers to do cool things you wouldnât expect them to be able to do, the failscene is about getting very high powered computers to fail at doing boring things we already know how to do without them. Another project where Iâm going to use my terminal widget toolkit is a hex editor. This is still very young, obviously, and thereâs a lot of work to do (both in the toolkit and this particular application), but Iâm making some progress:
https://movq.de/v/2bae14ed16/vid-1769283187.mp4
Since this program is UTF-8 clean (I hope), you can do things like enter multi-byte UTF-8 sequences or paste them from the system clipboard (another hex editor I just tried failed to do this correctly):
https://movq.de/v/e9241034c1/vid-1769283755.mp4
Under the hood, Iâm using mmap() with MAP_PRIVATE, which is really cool: I get the entire file as a byte array, no matter how large it is, no need to actually read it upfront; and MAP_PRIVATE means that I can write to this area however I like without changing the underlying file. The kernel does copy-on-write for me. Only when you hit Save, it will write to the filesystem. And itâs just a couple lines of code. The kernel does all the magic. đ„ł

There are several reasons why a .au domain registration might fail or be cancelled, including inaccurate registrant information, ineligibility for a .au domain licence, or issues related to Australian law.

All my newly added test cases failed, that movq thankfully provided in https://git.mills.io/yarnsocial/twtxt.dev/pulls/28#issuecomment-20801 for the draft of the twt hash v2 extension. The first error was easy to see in the diff. The hashes were way too long. Youâve already guessed it, I had cut the hash from the twelfth character towards the end instead of taking the first twelve characters: hash[12:] instead of hash[:12].
After fixing this rookie mistake, the tests still all failed. Hmmm. Did I still cut the wrong twelve characters? :-? I even checked the Go reference implementation in the document itself. But it read basically the same as mine. Strange, what the heck is going on here?
Turns out that my vim replacements to transform the Python code into Go code butchered all the URLs. ;-) The order of operations matters. I first replaced the equals with colons for the subtest struct fields and then wanted to transform the RFC 3339 timestamp strings to time.Date(âŠ) calls. So, I replaced the colons in the time with commas and spaces. Hence, my URLs then also all read https, //example.com/twtxt.txt.
But that was it. All test green. \o/

@prologic@twtxt.net I know we wonât ever convince each other of the otherâs favorite addressing scheme. :-D But I wanna address (haha) your concerns:
I donât see any difference between the two schemes regarding link rot and migration. If the URL changes, both approaches are equally terrible as the feed URL is part of the hashed value and reference of some sort in the location-based scheme. It doesnât matter.
The same is true for duplication and forks. Even today, the âcannonical URLâ has to be chosen to build the hash. Thatâs exactly the same with location-based addressing. Why would a mirror only duplicate stuff with location- but not content-based addressing? I really fail to see that. Also, who is using mirrors or relays anyway? I donât know of any such software to be honest.
If there is a spam feed, I just unfollow it. Done. Not a concern for me at all. Not the slightest bit. And the byte verification is THE source of all broken threads when the conversation start is edited. Yes, this can be viewed as a feature, but how many times was it actually a feature and not more behaving as an anti-feature in terms of user experience?
I donât get your argument. If the feed in question is offline, one can simply look in local caches and see if there is a message at that particular time, just like looking up a hash. Whereâs the difference? Except that the lookup key is longer or compound or whatever depending on the cache format.
Even a new hashing algorithm requires work on clients etc. Itâs not that you get some backwards-compatibility for free. It just cannot be backwards-compatible in my opinion, no matter which approach we take. Thatâs why I believe some magic time for the switch causes the least amount of trouble. You leave the old world untouched and working.
If these are general concerns, Iâm completely with you. But I donât think that they only apply to location-based addressing. Thatâs how I interpreted your message. I could be wrong. Happy to read your explanations. :-)

Problem solved â but itâs a completely unpopular approach, they all want to use the web site. I donât get it. Then, of course, when itâs down, shit hits the fan. (Luckily, our timetracking software is neither developed nor run by us anymore. Itâs a silly cloud service, but the upside is that Iâm not responsible anymore. đ€·)
Some of our oldschool devs tried to roll out local timetracking once, about 15 years ago. I donât remember anymore why they failed âŠ
This is developed inhouse, Iâm just so glad that weâre not a software engineering company. Oh wait. How embarrassing.
Oh to be anonymous on the internet. That must be nice. đ

Spent an absurd amount of time searching for the âupdate forkâ button on #gitlabâs web interface.
Why? Because it turns out you can only see it if you are in landscape, in portrait view the button simply does not existâŠ
