@dce@hashnix.club Apart from the crap produced in Redmond two decades ago, I only ever used and still happily use Linux, mainly Debian and Ubuntu. I’ve no idea, but maybe something in there catches your eye: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_operating_systems (I know, what a silly recommendation.)
You can explicitly use colors in manpages. I saw this in the apt manpage of Ubuntu recently, which, for some reason, uses blue text in one place:
https://movq.de/v/de5ab72016/s.png
Makes little sense to me. I’m glad that most manpages don’t do this. I wouldn’t want unicorn vomit all over the place.
Using colors can be done using the low level commands \m and \M:
.TH foo_program 3
\m[blue]I'm blue\m[], da ba dee.
\m[red]\M[yellow]I'm red on yellow.\m[]\M[]
This is quite horrible.
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz after 5 years or so with Linode, I started having little—but annoying—issues with them. Moved to Vultr and have been very happy with them since Ubuntu 16.04, so 9 years, and a little bit more.
Prosodical Thoughts: Debian repository key change
We have been working on some changes to our Debian/Ubuntu package repository.
If you use our repository to keep up to date with new Prosody packages, you
need to take action before 4th August 2025 to continue receiving updates
smoothly.
The ‘apt’ utility has been moving towards a new format for specifying package
repositories. If you are familiar with putting deb lines in a sources.list

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org which browser do you use? Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, under Ubuntu, all show it fine.
In all fairness, GOG says that Forsaken is only supported on Ubuntu 16.04 – not current Arch Linux. If you ask me, this just goes to show that Linux is not a good platform for proprietary binary software.
Is it free software, do you have the source code? Then you’re good to go, things can be patched/updated (that can still be a lot of work). But proprietary binary blobs? Very bad idea.

[WTS] [~0.37 XMR] Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon x1 gen2
Laptops are in good condition, battery can last several hours still, biggest defect is the Touch Bar (which includes the F1-F12 and media keys) is turning hazy and is not cosmetically pleasant. Touch Bar and thus keys all still work. Each laptop has a valid Windows 10 keys but I can also install Ubuntu or Debian upon request.

@aelaraji@aelaraji.com odd, I ran it under Ubuntu 24.04, and got the same result as @prologic@twtxt.net (which is on macOS), zq4fgq.
@off_grid_living@twtxt.net Is there a particular reason why you run it through wine? And not the ‘standard’ ubuntu way of doing it? It’ll make it much easier to make sure things are working the way it should.. :)
If some of you budding fathers want to know how I created a computer nerd to one day work for Facebook in the big USA, well you purchase a $1000 Xmas present, an enormous thick book with C++ programming, and say, you can play as many games as you like kids, but James has to create them using computer software.
SO James created once a 3D chess program with sound, took 6 months or so, really hard to beat, not based on logic moves point by point like other chess programs, this one was based on the depth of looking for patterns, set it to 5 moves ahead and you were toast every time. Nice program too, sadly gone over the years, computers suffer from bit rot. We used to try and mark rotten hard drive discs once as bad sectors, not sure how UBuntu does this these days, I see a dozen errors on the screen every time I load.
Today I would purchase for my kids AI CAD simulation software with metal 3D printer and get your child to build fancy 3D models and engines from scratch. This will make them an expert in the CAD AI industry by the time they are 14 years old. Sadly AI is here to stay and will spoil the Internet.
Hey all your computer experts, I am having trouble with running Apache on my Ubuntu machine using Vine, the problem I think is configuring the /apache/conf/httpd.conf file, I usually NotePad2.exe edit it and change the path to the appropriate files

wsl-vpnkit: Internet for WSL2 distros behind a VPN
I’m still alive. 👋 Today, at work, I discovered a nice little tool for WSL2. On my work laptop I need to use Cisco AnyConnect to connect to the corporate network. Unfortunately this blocks Internet access in Windows Subsystem for Linux VMs (at least in the Ubuntu VM, I tried to use for some Docker stuff). I tried a lot of different hacks and workarounds, but none worked. Until I found wsl-vpnkit. It just works. 😄 ⌘ Read more

@benk@kwiecien.us Ubuntu is being similarly mean to me. “Can’t upgrade X because Y depends on older version. Can’t update Y because there’s a dependency problem”. I’m pretty sure the dependency problem would be solved with an upgrade, but I can’t perform one…

I fixed my now-year-long semi-intermittent sound problem, & the explanation is compellingly stupid: sometimes when ubuntu upgrades sound driver modules it doesn’t make the /dev/snd tree user-writable, & pulse runs as the logged-in user.
It seems like every time I reboot, Ubuntu manages to forget about another piece of hardware I have. First it was the USB controller, then the wifi (still not fixed), and now it’s my sound card.
