Gootosocial to a Pleroma one. While GTS is kinda cute (lightweight and easy to manage) of a software, the inability to fetch/scroll through people's past toots when visiting a profile or having access to a federated timeline and a proper search functionality ...etc felt like handicap for the past N months.
@aelaraji@aelaraji.com good luck with that! Their installation requirements, and install document in general give me headache. While on the contemplating topic, I too am contemplating shutting down my ActivityPub altogether. No GoToSocial, no nothing. I am mostly a lurker, so will not miss it much.
config.yaml, and 4 lines Caddyfile, and you will see how easy it is.
@prologic@twtxt.net I am telling you that is extremely easy: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/advanced/host-account-domain/. Now, if you are putting into account your rather⌠unique setup, then thatâs another story.
@prologic@twtxt.net I will share later my GoToSocial 10 lines (or less) config.yaml, and 4 lines Caddyfile, and you will see how easy it is.
@bender@twtxt.net Maybe so. But running Mastodon or GotoSocial is actually not as easy as youâd think đ
@bender@twtxt.net Not even a GotoSocial server? đ¤
@aelaraji@aelaraji.com gotosocial is epic
So⌠I wanna take a stab at the #ActivityPub bee hive, but Iâm not sure what to pick up, a #Gotosocial pocket knife or a #Snac2 bamboo stick? Any thoughts?
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz lack of RAM, or weak CPU? I run GoToSocial too, on a 1GiB RAM VPS. đ
CAN MY FEDI INSTANCE STOP CRASHING
(it is running gotosocial which is like one of the lightest fedi servers out there. the machine it runs on is as old as a high schooler. guess the root problem)

@prologic@twtxt.net Gemini has an answer for you:
This is a conversation thread from a twtxt network, detailing a userâs (movq) frustration with the Mastodon âexport dataâ feature and their consideration of self-hosting a fediverse alternative. Hereâs a summary:
- movqâs initial issue:
- movq is concerned about the volatility of their data on their current Mastodon instance due to a broken âexport dataâ feature.
- They contacted the admins, but the issue remains unresolved.
- This led them to contemplate self-hosting.
- movq is concerned about the volatility of their data on their current Mastodon instance due to a broken âexport dataâ feature.
- Alternative fediverse software suggestions:
- kat suggests gotosocial as a lightweight alternative to Mastodon.
- movq agrees, and also mentions snac as a potential option.
- kat suggests gotosocial as a lightweight alternative to Mastodon.
- movqâs change of heart:
- movq ultimately decides that self-hosting any fediverse software, besides twtxt, is too much effort.
- movq ultimately decides that self-hosting any fediverse software, besides twtxt, is too much effort.
- Resolution and compromise:
- The Mastodon admins attribute the export failure to the size of movqâs account.
- movq decides to set their Mastodon account to auto-delete posts after approximately 180 days to manage data size.
- Movq also mentions that they use auto-expiring links on twtxt to reduce data storage.
- The Mastodon admins attribute the export failure to the size of movqâs account.
Thatâs a great idea. I am running GoToSocial in a local server (like Raspberry Pi) and itâs working fine.
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz Oh, yes, itâs probably going to be something like gotosocial or snac. Itâs got to be as lightweight as possible. (I call this whole thing âMastodonâ, but youâre right, thatâs not quite correct. đ )
@movq@www.uninformativ.de mastodon is probably the worst fedi software to self host tbh, you might wanna check out gotosocial? not to like pull you in another direction but idk masto is just suuuuper heavy lol
Wow, GtS keeps getting better! Re: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/admin/domain_permission_subscriptions/#fun-stuff-to-do-with-domain-permission-subscriptions
@kat@yarn.girlonthemoon.xyz iâm reading this and i already have a gts server that i could secure with this but iâm thinking itâd be best for most of my public sites https://ovelny.sh/blog/a-complete-guide-for-your-gotosocial-server/
My next Fediverse migration?
I currently use GoToSocial (with my numeronym domain) next to my blog, but it always confuses me where to post what. Thatâs why I want to move to my blog as my sole Fediverse identity. But before that, I wanted to implement another Fediverse feature in GoBlog: support for the new fediverse:creator meta tag. â Read more
@prologic@twtxt.net that âlittle database that couldâ is simply amazing, isnât it? I run Conduwuit (nevermind, this one is RocksDB), and GoToSocial using it as a backend, no issues. And, of course, sqlite is the database of choice for a lot of things under iOS.
I posted about GoToSocial, but another Mastodon-alternative and Fediverse software, TakahÄ, seems to make fast progress and has some unique features like support for multiple domains or multiple identities per user. I havenât tried running it yet, but it looks promising! â Read more
GoToSocial seems like a promising alternative to Mastodon. Itâs written in Go (đ in my opinion), lightweight and pretty good documented so far. Itâs still âalpha softwareâ but seems to make great progress. In the past, I self hosted a microblog.pub instance and then after some time without any Fediverse profile other than my blog, which has ActivityPub support as well, signed up at Fosstodon to be able to reply to blog comments from the Fediverse. I already set up an instace of GTS, but will probably wait to use it ⌠â Read more
