In-reply-to » 📣 FYI: I have completed my Github migration and deleted all repositories and gists hosted on Github. Any project that I cared about and/or actively maintain is now available at git.mills.io (with Github OAuth enabled). This is an instance of Gitea and I migrated from Gogs -- So if you had an account on the old Gogs instance please migrate over. The old instance will available at https://gogs.mills.io/ for a few weeks. Thankyou! 🙇‍♂️

@prologic@twtxt.net Other Auth? Facebook? Just kidding… 🤣 I can’t think of any other. Github it is one that fits well.

@prologic@twtxt.net Nice! Great idea to use GitHub auth, it helps ppl that want to collaborate

@ocdtrekkie@twtxt.net @prologic@twtxt.net The only convenience that I see on Github (apart from the discoverability) it is that with one account I can create issues in any project. If we start hosting our code on our own Github like instances we will need to have an account for each instance. Which is a bit inconvenient (just a bit because we are likely to use a password manager and it would be set once and forget)

@ocdtrekkie@twtxt.net @prologic@twtxt.net Perhaps treating the Github project page as a Twitter™ account that some OSS project have where you can link to the real project source and have a Readme there on Github with a FAQ. I don’t know. But it is a bit of the story repeating itself, right? Some website comes around, looks inoffensive, everybody start using it, becomes relevant to what we do, and then, some company comes around and start to change rules and abusing it. I think the lesson is only one here: Take ownership of your identity and don’t rely in a centralized service.

@prologic@twtxt.net @jlj@twt.nfld.uk @xuu@txt.sour.is I am not a heavy user of IRC, so I don’t know but I would consider using libera over freenode. I actually don’t get it. The person who sold the freenode, what did it sell? Just the domain name, right? But since IRC is centralized it gets all the communities in it? It probably had a value because the irc server and all the ppl connecting to that domain?

In-reply-to » Choosing Matrix/Element as a messenger for my family was a mistake. It’s way too complicated. And apparently, the app on smartphones is pretty confusing: Family members repeatedly end up in the settings dialog for the chat room? Since modern UIs are all utter garbage (Which UI elements can be clicked/activated? Nobody knows! Everything is flat!), they have a hard time leaving that dialog, so they call me. And then all the crypto stuff, that no normal user ever understands, and trusted devices, and … oh, fuck off man. I just want a chat.

@mckinley@twtxt.net @prologic@twtxt.net @xuu@txt.sour.is I really wish there would be better apps for XMPP.

@prologic@twtxt.net @xuu@txt.sour.is @mckinley@twtxt.net I haven’t heard of Threema. And you are right you need to connect your phone to the desktop app to use Signal on the computer.

@prologic@twtxt.net @mckinley@twtxt.net @xuu@txt.sour.is I heard ppl were worried that Signal haven’t update the source code upstream in a while. I mean I agree it is the best option but I am also still looking around.

@prologic@twtxt.net @mckinley@twtxt.net @xuu@txt.sour.is That is the one. I used it before. Did some tests early on and wasn’t impressed. The video calls lagged a bit. Perhaps they have improved it. I also would like to look into what happened with the ownership you mentioned. The last thing I want is to switch all family members to another Whatsapp.

@xuu@txt.sour.is @mckinley@twtxt.net @prologic@twtxt.net yeah that makes sense. I personally use smartphones but I can see your point. Right now I don’t have a way around it, specially after I became a smartphone app developer. 😱

@mckinley@twtxt.net @xuu@txt.sour.is @prologic@twtxt.net Do you mean tracking as in location tracking? If so I think you can always turn off location service for the app, right? Or Am I missing something?

@xuu@txt.sour.is @prologic@twtxt.net Session is interesting. I gave it a go too. But in the end I just ended up testing with a friend out of curiosity. I agree it is not as polished.

@movq @prologic@twtxt.net I read somewhere that Signal is considering removing the phone number requirement. Hopefully this will be a option for you soon. I also wish Matrix has easier for normal users. To setup the server I used Yunohost and it was really easy, even with federation.

@jlj@twt.nfld.uk Nice. Are you in UK, right? That is the one it’s been administered over there, right? Good to know that things are moving forward in the UK too. Over here in the US, Moderna and Pfizer are the most used. J&J is been administered too, but for now it’s been suspended while they look into some side effects. I had Pfizer.
