What I can add, something controversial, is that those huge companies like power and controlling who can access to the info is a source of power.

Something that disappoints me is that they use open standards for a while (XMPP for FB Messenger, RSS, email) and when it’s not convenient anymore they stop those APIs.
I understand they need to make money for their investors, but… I don’t know what to say than, we could decide not to be the product.

This is what makes my wife angry about Open Source.

We as open source developers that create open source software and open standards, pour blood sweat and tears into the things that we create only to have companies use and abuse them, to gain power and control and make a shit load of money and never contribute anything back.

@prologic@twtxt.net I think the OSI positions are paid positions via memberships/donations. Which is to say, the status quo is perfectly sustainable… for the OSI.

I had recent conversations with both the OSI’s Executive Director and Standards Director, and both conversations convinced me the OSI does not remotely care about sustainable open source.
