So… What a crazy ass world we live in! 🤦‍♂️ Any of you (I know @deebs@twtxt.net does) remember when Minecraft was a kids games for kids and created by this awesome guy and was open source (I believe)? 🤔 – That is until he sold it to Microsoft (who bought it for stupid amounts of money). What did Microsoft go and do with it? That’s right kids! 😅 They forced everyone old and new ever wanting to play the game to have a “Microsoft” account. 🤦‍♂️ – So my daughter has been wanting to play for some years now, I’ve said “No”. But she’s a bit older now, so its getting harder to say no. – So she now has an account. But in order to protect her real identity and her email email address (I’m her father, of course I’m going to set her up in this stupid ass digital world properly 🤣); I had to 1) buy a random domain name 2) delegate it to Cloudflare 3) Setup Email routing. All this so I could setup basically “junk” / “throwaway” email addresses and create an account with “basically garbage data”. 🤦‍♂️

@prologic@twtxt.net I don’t think Minecraft itself was ever open-source. Also when it comes to burner emails (that I assume can’t be temporary in this case), is there any reason why go through all this, when you can just have an account on something like riseup.net, with a few strange aliases not linked to you?

@prologic@twtxt.net Back in the days my mates and I only played Minetest, an open source clone of Micecraft, that performed heaps better than the original, but also did not include all features from its model. More than sufficient for us who enjoyed and valued the building part. At least my appeal was to have unlimited construction blocks. We also operated our own server to build stuff together, like our CS building as best as we could. It’s been way more than a decade, though, when we had to compile it from source ourselves, not sure how well it works nowadays.

@prologic@twtxt.net aaahm. you could just get an account with a random email forwarding from duckduckgo? Or you could use mailgw.com (which i am using for quite some time for some services) or you could just use apple auto email forwarding thingy wingy?

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org I do play when I don’t have anything to do (not too often) but get hooked on them until completed, mostly retro games via RetroArch (GBA and PSX), I even set up some sync scripts to play seamlessly on my PC, Android phone and raspberry pi.

@lyse@lyse.isobeef.org oh I played a lot in the past. CS:1.6 in the past in a Clan, WoW and Euro Truck SIM 2. and more than a 1000 hrs in Factorio. still running.
nowadays with so many things in RealLufe and Work and with a house, gaming is rare. that’s why I only play on easy these days. I enjoy the story and that’s it 🤣😂😅

@carsten@yarn.zn80.net Yeah, hundreds games with no space, I played the first Pokemon GB/GBA just to analyze it’s structure and movement system, not my type of game.

What I mostly play are platformers, story based games and air combat.

But my all time best is Crash Bandicoot 2. 😁

@justamoment@twtxt.net I never played Crash Bandicot. But surprisingly my wife loved Ratchet and Clank as much as I did. The GTA series was also one I played a lot. Pokemon is just a game you can start, play a bit, an hour or more and put it away anytime you need to. Thats why I like turn based games a lot. In the past Battle of Wesnoth, Battle Isle, Battle World: Kronos, Faster Than Light, etc. you name it. Sanctuary RPG

@carsten@yarn.zn80.net I like turn based that keep mechanics simple, I’m one that never touch the inventory in a fight and only waste time to organize it instead of exploring. I tried Shining Soul (GBA) recently and lost hours in putting in order my herbs and weapons.

@prologic@twtxt.net make sure to save the information on that “throwaway” email, as you will need it in the future. You could have created an outlook.com account, it is free.

I get it you are ranting, and complaining about the way Microsoft has mismanaged the game, but creating a random, used-for-the-game-only email is trivial. There was no need for your 1, 2, and 3 steps, if you, indeed, went through all of that. 🤣
