The problem is Mastodon is really a “distributed” network, not really “decentralised” per se, it is and is isn’t in the strictest sense. Instances get far too large, and you can see what happens when they grow even larger, they strain and struggle to keep up with the load and traffic on them.

Blocking bad instances is necessary, but it wouldn’t be as necessary if instances were much smaller IMO.
